KISMET!
  10:23pm
Listener Robert:

If you're not taking calls, (I'm ringing), I'll tell you the problem with this one: There was ANOTHER radio commercial jingle in the 1990s that resembled both tunes -- the one for White Hen Pantries.
  10:25pm
efd via mobile device:

YES, Listener Robert! "When you run out, run out to White Hen!"
  10:25pm
Listener Robert:

Maybe just as well you didn't pick up, since I have a bad cold, would've insisted on singing it, and thus started a coughing fit.
  10:29pm
Listener Robert:

I used to listen to WLIR a lot when I lived in the Bronx. I recall their having done something really stupid, though:

Their DJs cut a series of ads consisting of their Xmas/New Year wishes. One of them wished for spurious signals to emanate on a certain frequency. That made me curious, so I tuned that frequency in, found WBAB, and liked it a lot. I'd previously been unaware of WBAB as a competitor to them!

V Priceless:

Wow Dennis McNamara! LIR
  10:32pm
Marc15:

Was WLIR once called WDRE?
  10:33pm
V Priceless:

...and DRE were huge here on LI
  10:34pm
V Priceless:

"Dare to be different"
  10:35pm
Marc15:

WDRE was a great alternative rock station in 1980s and early 1990s . 92.7
  10:35pm
Listener Robert:

Mr. Byrne, you don't know what "spurious" means, or how to pronounce it? In radio slang, a "spur"?
  10:37pm
Marc15:

I still have a WDRE bumper sticker
  10:39pm
Listener Robert:

On air one WLIR (probably during the WDRE years) DJ made fun of purity poseurs: "I listen only to FMU, man."
  10:40pm
V Priceless:

XTC live at 'DRE...me and the wife crashed that one! Woo!
  10:46pm
V Priceless:

WLIR was in the old Imperial Square building in (then) beautiful downtown Hempstead! Q for Dennis: whatever happened to Ray White?
  10:47pm
Marc15:

WDRE introduced me to Morrissey & The Smiths and Squeeze
  10:49pm
Listener Robert:

Being a sucker for a gimmick, I stayed up late listening to them producing "My Canary Song" -- an awfully corny earworm of a piece, as it turned out.
  10:53pm
Listener Robert:

Come to think of it, Vin Scelsa might've been the one doing the doofus-voiced purity poseur saying, "I listen only to FMU, man," but that's OK because Vin Scelsa's "allowed".
  10:58pm
V Priceless:

Shock The Monkey, baby!
  10:58pm
Listener Robert:

This discussion's making me feel so old...and the irony is, these guys made me feel old BACK THEN! Guess that's why I like Rich Conaty's Music for the Old and the Old at Heart.
  11:03pm
Marc15:

I have a memory like an elephant, I remember listening to Opie and Anthony on September 11, 2001 and they were broadcasting from WLIR

Johnnie:

When I was a kid I was trapped in the provincial Bronx. 'LIR got me to get the hell of of there. I ended up in a band that won Screamer of the Week. December 1983. The song was The Way of Life. We were a synth-pop duo called The Puppets. WLIR was so supportive of New York City bands.

efd:

to this day I still end nearly every mic break with "WFMU." Thanks Denis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

hey Johnnie! I loved that Puppets record and still have the single. I was a big Nervus Rex fan too.
