Hello Charlie! And A and B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Little Danny:

Good day Charlie and all! Off to a rollicking start we are
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm doctorjazz:

Nice start, Hi Charlie and Nothing-doers. Love Benny Carter (one of the swing giants that's not so remembered these days). Got to speak to him after a show once, he was incredibly sweet as well as being a great player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

Hola! ßrian! Annie! Michael! Little Danny! doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Passaic River Blues:

@Brian: have to thank you for consistently reminding me of Charlie's show.
Avatar 12:07pm Carmichael:

Heya Charlie and insomniacs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Little Danny:

@doctorjazz: totally agree about Carter not getting much attention these days. You have any personal favorites by him (or collections of his music) that I should look into?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Dominick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm doctorjazz:

@Little Danny-
I'm at work, pretty busy, but I can post a bit (can continue tonight if you wish). I think I must have 30 albums by Carter. He recorded for most of his 90+ years (?96), and had lots of great recordings. The big band stuff from early on is great (some have him on trumpet, which he had a nice style on as well as his alto). There is a great set of recordings with Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins (have seen it as American in Paris, released in other versions as well), which smokes. Later on, he has recordings that are great; Benny Carter Jazz Giant, Further Definitions, Central City Sketches, BBB & Co (with Ben Webster and Barney Bigard), his Pablo with Dizzy Gillespie, that will keep anyone busy for a while...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Little Danny:

Thanks DrJ! That definitely gives me a starting place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Parq:

ßrian -- haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Passaic River Blues:

Whoa, this is interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Parq:

What I've always loved most (of many things I dig) about that ISP track is the way the chorus goes turns on a dime from a lilting English-sounding melody in the first line to an American bluesy folk sound for the balance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Parq:

(Or turns on tenpence, if you prefer.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Charlie:

Yes, Parq, I agree. Brilliant song, the way it morphs from folk to blues. Funny lyrics too:)
