Learned something about payola: it helped put Rusty Warren on the charts, with the practice for comedy records being less attention-worthy for the authorities than rock.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm

What was it, Straight Life, if I remember correctly? Haven't read it (just starting an Anthony Braxton biography...slow going at the beginning).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
doctorjazz:

Eric Mingus, cool!
(went to see David Murray last night-his son was playing guitar in the band, Mingus Murray).
Avatar 3:28pm
geezerette:

Yeah, I think "Straight Life" is the title! Coudn't remember.
Avatar 3:29pm
geezerette:

How was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
doctorjazz:

It was great! (Murray isn't quite the powerhouse he was 20 years ago, but who is? He played tenor great, did 1 song on bass clarinet, had D.D. Jackson in the band, what could be bad?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

@doctorjazz
Are you reading Forces in Motion? If so, great book!
Avatar 3:33pm
geezerette:

Doug, doc, "Forces in Motion" Anthony Braxton?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
doctorjazz:

Don't mean to imply his playing was deficient-he circular breathed (?) and played incredibly long lines, it was great to hear him. I just remember him blowing the roof off...

Yeah, Forces In Motion is the book, just at the beginning, mostly discussing Sun Ra, though Braxton does seem very sweet...
  3:34pm
βrian:

Who's hollerin' in the background there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Jeff Golick:

Forces in Motion: yes yes yes. (How did you find your copy, if I may ask, @doctorjazz?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
doctorjazz:

@Jeff, you had recommended it, so I just looked for it on Amazon, and ordered a copy from them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

@geezerette
Forces in Motion is a book, not a doc. But it should be!

@Dean, I was tempted to stay for the late set (being a school day, and maybe a bit responsible, sent me home after the early set). And, he's going to have the Octet Friday and Saturday; not likely I'll make it again, but it would be nice.
