How did I not know the Soft Cell was a cover?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

The Gloria Jones is a HUGE Northern Soul record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

She and Marc Bolen had an encounter with a tree. The tree won.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Gary:

Ah, I'm guessing that's how SC first heard it?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I heard that Marc Almond was a soulie in his days before Soft Cell
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! She and Bolan had a son together I believe.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Gary:

I first heard that song in San Francisco in late 1983 or 84 and assumed it was (a) an original and (b) responding to the AIDS crisis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Parq:

I remember the Marc Almond Band from the mid 70s, but they didn't make much of an impression on me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

Differnt guy. That was Mark Almond, Johnny Mark and I forget who Almond
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

Gary - I wonder if there was an intentional subtext in the SC cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Ohhh. Gary, now it's my turn to admit what I never knew.

The Soft Cell "official" video for Tainted Love....well, I just watched it...and....well....I feel a little tainted myself. And bemused. And making a gesture that says what the f and why the f. Ohhhh, them early burps of the video boom.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Funky16Corners:

It's amazing having lived through that and come all the way out on the other side. I wonder what it all must look like to kids today?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey, somebody cues up the wrong song...cough
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

I always thought there was, Larry, but I just looked it up and SC released their version in 1981, so I'm guessing not
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

It works that way though. Prescient?

I mean, the single was that b/w "Where Did Our Love Go?" ... so, yes, totally
Avatar 10:51pm
still b/p:

Back to the vids: Once videos started to rise out of awful, all kinds of credit was bestowed, strangely. I know budgets matter, but still, they didn't have to be THAT awful. I wondered at the time why SO damn many were so damn goofy or so hamfisted, awkward and primitive in concepts and production approaches, aside from budget constraints. Simple attentions to examples from unhidden sources all around could've bumped up the class and creativity, eased the crudeness and cock-eyed conventions. This, this I would pontificate to the kids looking back today.

Is Larry breaking up or is it my player?

Psychedelic music brings back visions of kerosene lamps on crocheted lace table cloths, antique tables and chairs, crystal pendants hanging in stained glass windows, Moroccan leather wool lined coats and a widespread belief that you could live in the previous century simply by pretending, that things would be better there. I had a lot of older friends who lived in various canyons. They were glamorous and crazy in equal measure. I was never a hippy, but some of my best friends...

A couple weeks ago, listened several times to original God Only Knows. If I'm going to sing it in private with a terrible weak falsetto, I finally wanted the notes of the darn sung melody line correct.

Nudie born in Ukraine. Some of that colorful art influence seen in the designs?

That's very likely with Nudie. I'd never considered that!
