I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Speaking of caves, or holes in the ground like caves, Taiko Masala will be playing in the Widow Jane Mine (Rosendale NY) , July 9th!

Doug! Are you done with school and papers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm

@fred
Blessedly yes! I am halfway through a four-month summer break. It's going fast.
Avatar 12:13pm
Mayuko:

Doug! Happy summer break to you!
Hi Henry! I haven't seen Taiko Masala, or any taiko performance in the US, perhaps I should sometime. Gonna try go hear some Shakuhachi this weekend, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
fred:

A four-month summer break? I hope none of the admins at the university here hear about that! Graduate students have it bad enough already with the current two-month break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Doug Schulkind:

Well I am working full-time during the summer, just not on school work.

This Jim Denley track is really nice. I haven't seen him in years, I hope this new release will bring him back nearby

Tricky's potty mouth once got me in some trouble while driving a cab! i should've known better.
Avatar 12:35pm
Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ Why, what happened?!?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
fred:

I first listened to Tricky's Blowback when I first read Pynchon's "the crying of lot 49" and the two have become so tied together in my mind that one brings up the other. I can't think of any other such book/record link I might have
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
fred:

Are the Bayaka related to the Baka that Afrirampo recorded with?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
coelacanth∅:

okay Mayuko ...i picked up 4 guys -"blacks" (i loathe these terms but it's pertinent to the story) who got settled in just as Tricky sang something that would cause some old people to faint! (i forget what song - from either maxinquaye or angels with dirty faces)
...one guy in the back caught it and decided i must be "a homo" and went on & on - calling me "Elton John"! (i guess all "white" guys with glasses look like Elton John?) until finally i pulled over and yelled at them all that if they don't shut their racist asshole friend up NOW they all get out HERE!
...they shut him up and the guy in front apologised and said his friend is an idiot.

@fred yeah, I was confused by the way it spells too, but Afrirampo went to Cameroon and Baka is how they spell (or call) it there, I think.

Hope to make some of these...always stuff going in in the interim, try to get to some (work, family, sleep tend to get in the way...).
You always get out to interesting stuff, anything recent?
Avatar 1:31pm
Mayuko:

coelacanth∅, I wonder what it was that he's singing! I should read his lyrics more now that I would understand better. But I like it when he says things like "Stop me talking like a tough guy", "I'm too scared to be a gangsta wanna-be". I think it's still meaningful to hear things like that from men (Though not 100% sure if I got all what he says correctly....) I'm so sick and tired of this idiotic machoism that calls other people "a homo" or whatever, it really has to go within 21st century. Good for you that you shut that idiot up!
Avatar 1:34pm
Mayuko:

Hello doctorjazz! glad to have you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
fred:

Frisell and DeJohnette, that looks good indeed. Not much these days: the cheap venues are closing down for summer, I avoid the overpriced festivals like the plague, and the cool free outdoors shows that used to happen will probably be canceled again for "security" reasons. I may have already told you about a Doneda / Lê Quan Ninh set that was really good, with John Russell opening with a great but maybe too short set

When I saw "this is not This Heat" at Sonic Protest, this is a side they didn't feature. Sad!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
doctorjazz:

This Villalobos is cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
coelacanth∅:

Mayuko @1.31 i could say, but it was explicitly sexual - and probably addressed to a woman; but this guy was clearly a bigot already so he decided that it must be a gay reference.
...but yeah, Tricky's style is decidedly not macho, so that may have fueled it.
Avatar 2:04pm
Mayuko:

@23 Wolves Woo hoo! A fellow Miner! Maybe they need to add many more mods to make it work as a sandbox therapy tool though, haha. But still, whenever I play it in creative mode, I feel like I'm directly traveling and peeking inside of my own mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
coelacanth∅:

...and, what doctorjazz said.
Avatar 2:14pm
Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ I guess it wasn't machoism, but "machismo"! nothing I say can sound serious with all these silly mistakes, haha.
but anyway I think it's interesting that his style is like you said decidedly not macho, despite of the sound referencing hip-hop and rap music that are often very macho.

Extra Play Vertigo!

Mayuko:

This Villalobos track IS like moire patterns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
fred:

back! Looks like I wasn't the only one on a last-ditch ice cream run
Avatar 2:28pm
Mayuko:

@fred ...and still the brass music is going on! haha. I need to get me some ice cream too once I'm done here!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
fred:

This should become the new usual: use the extra hour to play longer tracks or stuff you want to play but don't make sense with the regular show. Take free-form to the creative mode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

(Note to self): One day, I need to start up an ice cream delivery business.
Avatar 2:37pm
Mayuko:

oh my, I never knew if a track you play is too long the system automatically shuts your playlist down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
fred:

@Ken: make sure to hit Montgomery street on Saturday afternoons. You'll get a customer with influence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Are we trapped in a live / archive time warp loop now? I hope there's a way out to acquire more ice cream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
fred:

That's a really cool Chopin track. I didn't like much of what I'd heard of his work, until now
Avatar 2:42pm
Mayuko:

Starting an ice cream business means WAR! Also, it does seem to be we're living the past and present at once on this playlist for some reason. Time interfering and creating moire patterns here. I blame Villalobos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@fred - I'll always keep a drone ready for the Saturday afternoon ice cream delivery to Montgomery Street.
Avatar 2:45pm
Mayuko:

oh! a drone business! you can definitely get ahead of other aggressive ice cream trucks!
Avatar 2:46pm
Mayuko:

They might shoot your drones down, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
fred:

But you said there were no ice cream truck around, so it's not even contested territory. Looks like the major powers don't even know Jersey City exists. Major power vacuum there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Then I shall equip the drones with heat rays and melt their products from above. They will cower before my mighty heat drones! Muwah ha ha ha!
  2:53pm
Doctorjazz:

Going to have to get some ice cream as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
fred:

Dentales Soufflées might refer to sounds involving teeth (consonants?) and "soufflées" involves breathiness. People at work would make sense of this, but it's above my pay grade. It's likely to be about a specific kind of human-made sound
Avatar 2:57pm
Mayuko:

Ice cream war around here will be even more bloody it seems!
Avatar 2:58pm
Mayuko:

@fred ha! that sounds interesting, it must be explaining the sound HE was making!
Avatar 2:59pm
Mayuko:

Again, thank you all for listening! Have a beautiful weekend & a week, see you next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
fred:

I think so, but I don't know. I"ve heard these words before in a technical sense, that's all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar 3:00pm
Mayuko:

(And yes fred @2:32 - I suppose I can use this extra hour to play many other long tracks, I'll see!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the fun afternoon, Mayuko. This is the first time I've been in an archive that's still live. Take care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
fred:

The extra freedom is that it doesn't have to be one hour. It could be 20 minutes one week, and maybe 70 the next. You've outlasted the clock by that point
