Wow, thee Mr. *Bob* Dobalina?

Listened just this evening to Alex and Nels Cline with Mark Dresser and Greg Bendian's Interzone from 1996. A. Cline is a splendid drummer.

This group, The Necks, what's all the hollerin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
jj.:

in what sense? veteran all-improv trio from australia. don't usually play with orchestras, though.
  12:59am
Dean:

I've never understood what makes them tick. "Veteran all-improv" doesn't explain much. I hear their work as pretty much devoid of ideas. They do stuff. It goes on. And so forth.

jj.:

well, i enjoy the ambient shapes/colors/spaces they hit as the texture thickens/thins, though this piece isn't where i'd start with them.

Check Laughing Clowns for a Neck, Chris Abrahams. A bit more friendly? www.youtube.com...
  1:06am
Dean:

Maybe I'm not listening from the right angle. I tend to love "ambient.../colors/spaces" shit. This bores me.

(N.B.: I dislike a lot of stuff for reasons I can't fathom.)

The whole 'pair X up with a symphony orchestra' has a substantial failure rate. This is getting to be one of them. There's better tension and cohesion by themselves.

jj.:

yeah, i wouldn't disagree, fleep. tbh, i wanted to listen to this on the big studio speakers. but what i value about them is the conversational stuff within those drifts. not what this piece is about.

Dean:

Pairing X up with a symphony orchestra worked might nicely with Procol Harum!

corry342:

There's a long tradition of pairing up X with a symphony orchestra, going back at least to the 1950s, and its mostly a history of failure. Procol Harum was a success, yes, but there's lots of boring jazz albums from the 1950s and terrible prog rock albums from the 1970s with the Podunk Symphony Orchestra

yes, 342, days of future passed is another. "nights in white satin" is the only track on the whole album that benefits from the orchestration.
