hm, a Miles Davis In a Silent Way 45. That is like the Alice Coltrane 45 that Little Danny played a while ago.

I just want to go to the bar where those are on the jukebox

The flavor just makes me wonder.....if Gary Lewis had gotten into weed by the time of that song.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Uncle Michael:

I've come to think of Gary Lewis as one of those artists where there's a lot of great material...but not the hits...the hits are crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
melinda:

hi hyde!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm

Hi guys! Yeah I was shocked when I found that Miles 45, BTW I like a lot of Gary's hits, too, but his later albums are full of undiscovered treasures
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm

what was his biggest hit? I can't remember.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm

This Diamond Ring
Avatar 10:13pm

The hits are bubbley gummy pop but seem to suit their pop moment/period.

White Whale must have had great A&R. Was anything bad ever released on that label?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Yes, produced by Duane Eddy, arranged by Warren Zevon

Predated by the original by Albert Hammond
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Uncle Michael:

I do like to share those, hyde.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah, but the Hollies borrows more heavily from Phil than Albert...which makes sense.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Funky16Corners:

The Hammond version is weird
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

I have an Albert Hammond single for Friday's Very Special Hinky Dinky Time. You'd guess it, so don't!

Get this, about Gary Lewis: "His mother....intended to name him after her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but a clerical error led to his naming as 'Gary'".
And though Gary isn't much different in sound, I think if he were Cary, other kids woulda been more likely to taunt him with many hah-has as "Shari Lewis."

When I listened as a kid I wondered if "all he left us was alone," or "a loan," as in leaving them nuthin' but his debts.
I seemed to recall commenting thusly here some time ago...and just found it in one of the Steinski replays five years ago, when I was cued by praise for the lyric from commenter Doug Schulkind! DJ vu.

Norman Whitfield brought funk to Motown. That's pretty huge.

I am nothing if not predictable.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Transcended it, too, and did some visionary production early on with the Velvelettes among others
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

My favorite thing he ever did was Masterpiece, with the Temptations in a supporting role.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Uncle Michael:

I love the full eleven minute version of the Temps record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i saw a band do "...rolling stone" over the weekend and could not have expected such a worthy rendition. -aside from the 4 excellent instrumentalists, the main singer (they all had mics) shifted seamlessly between the different vocals in the style of the 5 temps in their version.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

I think you have to hear the entire Temps take, which fortunately you can get on the 45. It is a masterpiece of dynamics.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Uncle Michael:

How can that full version fir on a 45, pts 1&2?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

They did it. You have to crank it up a bit

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

This predates it by a few years
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Uncle Michael:

Tom Shipley co-write.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

It's their song, but they gave it to the Poor first. There are a couple of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band versions of their stuff earlier than that first album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

well shit, i'd like to take the album version and mix in that b-side instrumental at the end for a 17 minute version.

Funky16Corners:

I'd love to find a copy
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

This 45 has one of the biggest disparities between A and B sides. The flip is a corny pop soul thing
Avatar 11:36pm
Kris Holmes:

ha, what is the flip? i own none of the 45s
Avatar 11:38pm
northguineahills:

ISB had a renaissance in the early noughts, but then the kids stopped talking about them amongst other Brit folk bands being revived.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

It's a song called Salt and Pepper which has some Northern Soul devotees, but it's pretty bad (this is the Esko Affair 45 I'm talking about)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

I think the ISB's problem was the pretty clear divide between Williamson's and Heron's styles. I like them both but it's a little schizo
Avatar 11:49pm
northguineahills:

true
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:50pm

They were also a little folky, freak folky, psychedelic, singer songwritery, kind of hard to draw a bead on for a casual listener
