However, I'm sure you know that Andrew Sandoval has a radio show named after this song and uses it as his theme song? I guess it just moved over here from Luxuria Music. So hearing this always makes me think his show is starting.

Van Dyke is awesome. BTW, Nilsson didn't write "... Talking" It was Fred Neil from St. Pete Fla... (I'm here now). He did the showbiz thing for a few and then went to work with dolphins. Great show.

Brubeck was cute, but really that was always a clunky unfunky 9/8 compared to the real Turkish 9/8 it's based on

how do you test the provenance of a piano? bill of sale? picture of him playing it? residual DNA on the keys?
Avatar 11:22pm
Dave Mandl:

I saw Brubeck with a small quartet at Carnegie Hall many years ago and the sound was so beautiful.
Avatar 11:22pm
Dave Mandl:

@geezerette: Thank you kindly. Making it up as I go along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

@Dave Mandl: Yup, and it wasn't even selling for a premium price (because it was Brubeck's piano), that really surprised me.

el Garree~:

The Lacy thing got me to thinking... Evan Parker played a while ago in Fla. Sam Rivers came over from Orlando and they traded off. Interesting nite. Just good folks to hang with. Sorry but everyone's an expert on this stuff except me. I only connected with Van Dyke Parks a few years ago. I had another life going on and didn't read all that stuff. I only heard from a friend who I guess knew Fred Neill so I didn't know that either, or just forgot it. The music is beginning to scream now! Mr. Dave, is that you on reverb or my rig? Anyway great set.

Avatar 11:29pm

@elG: Not sure about the reverb. I'm not adding any here on my end.
Avatar 11:33pm
HollyT:

@el Garree I knew Sam and his wife Bea. Having them here in Orlando for so many years was incredible. Know many people who played with his big band. When I lived in NYC people were always surprised to find out Orlando had an actual jazz scene. Next time you're over this way, check out Timucua White House and Blue Bamboo.
  11:37pm
el Garree~:

Ok, got it. Reverb must be on my side. Barbayiorgi has got that time sig observation correct. But you have to factor in when that song came out ('59). But most african american players had already been doing exotic sigs and then ramped it up in the '60's.
Avatar 11:42pm
Dave Mandl:

@elG: The funny thing is, as complex as a lot of jazz was, the vast majority was in 4/4, or 3/4. The crazy time signatures didn't really get going till fusion, Mahavishnu Orch etc.
  11:42pm
el Garree~:

Holly! This is great. I just loved Bea and Sam. I told music people here to latch on and promote Sam and don't let go. He's just the real deal and would walk away from some crap he didn't like. I'm in the land ' the burbs in T'Bay. Clay Pidg is from St. Pete. Don't tell anyone.
