I remember reading something about a Hungarian who half-jokingly claimed Hungarians are descendents of aliens
Avatar 10:53pm
HollyT:

Not only because their language is so bizarre, but also because Hungarians produce an abnormally high percentage of mathematicians and scientists

David Crosby recently ran a hilarious Twitter feed hating punk music.

northguineahills:

@HollyT: That's b/c the closest indo-european language related to Hungarian is Finnish, and they are very distantly related linguistically. The original Hungarians started moving into what is today Hungary in the early 5th century from the Eurasian steppe. They kept their language, unlike the Bulgarians, who moved into what is now Bulgaria from the Eurasian steppe in the 7th century. By the 11th century, Bulgarian had been mostly Slavicisized, linguistically.

Another historical linguistic lesson w/ ngh....

A lot of punk music actually sucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
northguineahills:

@Jake: A lot of music of any genre sucks (well, we both know that).
  11:04pm
JakeGould:

@northguineahills: So basically, Eastern Europe is too weird to ever summarize in one sentence.
  11:05pm
JakeGould:

@northguineahills: True. But in the case of punk—and especially hardcore—the strength of the bands is mainly the scene they are a part of an support. As an individual most hardcore punk is just crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
northguineahills:

My history degree is in Eastern European history, so all I can say is, ******!!!!!
  11:06pm
JakeGould:

@northguineahills: Amorphous borders and crazy changes in language as a result.

@ngh: Interesting! When I was applying for the Fulbright, I considered applying to Hungary (the thing I was working on was set in A-H preWWI). I ended up going to Czech Republic instead.

Hi ike, cranky, Bennett, ngh. Having some trouble with the internet connection here, so can't comment much.

Hardcore punk is almost a throw of the dice, more then half sucks, but I find a lot is amazing. But, your point still stands.
Avatar 11:08pm
HollyT:

Even though I lived there for a year and a half (I stayed post-Fulbright), I NEVER learned to speak Czech very well, and now that I've been back for almost 8 years, I've forgotten most of what I did learn. :(

Stevel:

This is very cool stuff. Fits the mood, NS the chemical balance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
northguineahills:

@HollyT: The amazing thing about Czechia, is that they maintained their Slavic language (they are the most westward surviving Slavic language). Most other regions around them were Germanified by the 16th century. Bohemia & Moravia had a strong streak of independence starting w/ the prot-Protestant Hussite wars in the 15th century where the Bohemian king lost his crown by decree in the peace treaty w/ the Holy Roman Empire.

Why did I study Eastern European history when I'm a WASP? B/c I didn't know anything about it beforehand. Pretty much how I approach anything in life.
Avatar 11:21pm
Dave Mandl:

@Jake: Yes, that's the correct URL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
northguineahills:

Czech was formalized in the 18th century, so it's the most archaic of Slavic languages (most weren't formalized until the mid-late 19th century). So, most other Slavic language speakers have a hard time learning it. (I don't speak Czech, I just know a few Czechs).
Avatar 11:24pm
HollyT:

ngh: A Polish lady told me that Poles think Czech sounds like Polish spoken by a four-year-old. :D

It's a very difficult language. 7 cases! (Russian only has 5)

Someone I know once said Dutch looks like English written by someone with brain damage. (I love Dutch.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Norweigians and Swedes think Danes are on demerol when they speak (it's a Nordic joke).

Now, don't get me started on the swamp Germans (the Dutch).

@dave, @ngh: lol
Avatar 11:29pm
HollyT:

I heard that the closest language to English is actually Frisian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
northguineahills:

@HollyT: You'd be correct. Frisian is the closest to pre-Norman English that exists in a modern context.
