Ah, some fresh sunshine to enjoy!

cometothesunshine:

Was interested to read that he had little experience as an arranger, maybe that was a put on. Certainly the Irving Spice strings were put through their paces on his productions.
Avatar 6:05pm
cometothesunshine:

How he got from the Black & Blues to the Lemon Pipers seems like a leap to.
Avatar 6:05pm
mce1965:

Yeah, I think that was untrue. Wow, Leka rawks on this one

Never realized the "green" tambourine was not the color, but more accurately the color of money.

Yes, I recall that story from KHJ's History Of Rock & Roll, though I don't think Leka was the one who relayed it

Shelley Pinz, his female songwriting partner, wrote the lyrics.

I am not sure MCE. I am guessing not, but I don't know enough about it. I remember having a conversation with Dr. Demento about that single during the Nuggets box assembly. I think we may have used his 45.

I've never heard this Leslie Gore before! It's great!
Avatar 6:22pm
cometothesunshine:

Jen - you will have to check out my Lesley Gore spotlight from some years back in the archive - lots of late 60s goodness
  Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

Interesting medley, that one!
Avatar 6:23pm
cometothesunshine:

I can't shake the 4 Seasons feeling on this record
Avatar 6:23pm
cometothesunshine:

But there are the Green Tambourine string runs - one year early
Avatar 6:23pm
Minerwerks:

Without Andrew, I would have never known that Lesley Gore did a version of 98.6. My dad overhearing it says he knew it, though!
Avatar 6:24pm
mce1965:

Yeah, definitely, but like a really good Four Seasons record that I actually want to hear
Avatar 6:25pm
cometothesunshine:

Thank you for that acknowledgement MW!
Avatar 6:25pm

I was wrong, The Carmel record is pretty close in rec date to Green Tambourine.

This production really has it all - great ear candy throughout.
Avatar 6:28pm

The Who also ripped off that string run for Tommy.
  Swag For Life Member 6:28pm

Those Buddha 45s really had the strings going' on
Avatar 6:28pm
mce1965:

Yeah, all the monos on these Buddah blow away the stereos... shame they're probably all gone.
Avatar 6:30pm
mce1965:

Have you played this version before?
Avatar 6:30pm
cometothesunshine:

No, first time on the show.
Avatar 6:30pm
mce1965:

I didn't recall hearing it... very nice. Hard to screw this song up.
Avatar 6:31pm
cometothesunshine:

This was an LP I bought in London that got very warped in the post - I never mailed back records again.
Avatar 6:31pm
cometothesunshine:

This was also a 45 in the UK.
Avatar 6:32pm
cometothesunshine:

Great 4 Seasons vibe on this Grapevine single
Avatar 6:32pm
cometothesunshine:

I personally feel the ELO cello signature is present in Leka's writing.
Avatar 6:33pm
mce1965:

Oh yeah, absolutely.
Avatar 6:33pm
cometothesunshine:

That last song Leka only arranged, but he has such a strong style on all of these.
Avatar 6:34pm
mce1965:

For sure. Totally hit his stride during '68 - '69
Avatar 6:34pm

Eleanor Rigby was obviously an influence on him.

Tangerine dreams?!? :-D

Sad that none of these songs were hits, Paul Leka did a rather beautiful job with the productions and strings.
Avatar 7:01pm
cometothesunshine:

Somewhat understated compared to the other songs I have played today.
Avatar 7:01pm
mce1965:

He kept them in Brown mode better than anyone else.
Avatar 7:01pm

That's why they hated him!

Exactly.
Avatar 7:03pm

Hi Andrew, I hadn't checked back for new podcasts in a whie, and was happy to see a Paul Leka show! A couple years ago, I did a 'deep dive' into Paul Leka written songs (using 45cat and Youtube), and I wanted to point out to you and any others still reading here a couple great tunes that didn't make the show: "Melissa Jones" by the Wellington Arrangement, and "You're The Sound of Love" by the Peppermint Rainbow. To my ears, as good as anything he ever did.
