I bought a digital recorder and it is reminding me that I need new glasses. The owner's manual print and control screen info are tiny.
Avatar 7:21pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

ah cool, what did you end up getting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
melinda:

Tascam DR-05
Avatar 7:31pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Nice one! I don't know much about those but it looks pretty good, congrats!
Avatar 7:31pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

also, I'll bet they have the manual online where you can zoom in..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
melinda:

I can read very tiny print if I take off my glasses, it's just getting kind of ridiculous how often I need to do it these days.

Still waiting for electricity at my house. I had it here to where I evacuated for 24 hours, and the water is working fine, so I'm going to shower. I've been breaking up trees all day. Still need to find gas, and the the main routes home are closed due to flooding. I made a recording of Irma, but only after it was no longer life-threatening. I don't think I have the cords to transfer the recording now, but remind me next week.
Avatar 7:47pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey northguineahills, glad to hear you're safe! Sounds crazy down there, hope your house is ok too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
melinda:

@ngh glad to hear things aren't worse. Falling trees are scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda i've considered that if my field recorder ever quit on me, or got stolen, i might get that tascam you got. i like the tascam gear i got and it's pretty reasonably priced, relatively.
-i'm happy for you!

@coel: thanks! what do you use for field recording?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

I use some Vietnamese street noise in one of my apps. Also Dave Soldier's recordings of a swamp. He has some Elephant recording here: davesoldier.com...
Avatar 7:56pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

ah, I have his elephant recordings but I'd consider those music, hadn't heard his swamp recordings though I have to dig those up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda, zoom h4n. i'm nothing but happy with it, but it was pretty expensive. maybe the cost has decreased by now?
i'm pretty rough on recording equipment - in terms of extreme rewind-pause-play-standby use. it's holding up so far.

Hi melinda! What are you planning to record with the new device?
Avatar 8:23pm

Glad to have you, there was a pretty great recording of bees in the first hour that's worth listening back to

I'm now posting some images from the Canadian painter Marcel Barbeau, multiple different years and styles all mixed up, you can read more on him: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
melinda:

@Mayuko: general field recordings. I found an old mini cassette recorder a while back which made me think it would be cool to go around capturing sounds, but when I did a test run the quality was horrible so I figured it was time to go digital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
coelacanth∅:

wow! i was doing something else and i come back and the playlist is all colorful!
Avatar 8:31pm
redkayak:

@melinda - do you have any recommendations for an intro level recorder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
coelacanth∅:

(doing something else while still listening to this loveliness, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
melinda:

@redkayak: as far as I can tell the one I got (Tascam DR-05) is intro level, but I haven't used it yet so I can't report on it. In my first search one of the articles I found mentioned a cheaper one that was $65, I think, but then I couldn't find it again. They also suggested just using a phone app, but seems like storage space would be an issue.
Avatar 8:38pm
chromaphone:

I think most digital recorders sound pretty good these days. I have a Sony PCM-D50 that does a good job but it was $500 7 years ago. One thing is that the better the mics the more susceptible to wind so windscreens become necessary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
coelacanth∅:

(re:8:28) when i was driving a taxi a few years ago i bought a little stereo cassette recorder to capture some of the ridiculousness. i didn't even look at digital ones; i figured i couldn't afford one.
the cassette recordings are barely usable. the car sounds render the voices almost inaudible.
Avatar 8:39pm
redkayak:

@melinda @chromaphone - awesome. Thanks for the ideas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
coelacanth∅:

the review for the dr-05 are generally quite positive. my guess is it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but makes excellent stereo recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
coelacanth∅:

(reviewS, that is)
Avatar 8:43pm
chromaphone:

Most of the recordings here were made with the Sony I mentioned: soundcloud.com... I almost always remove frequencies below 150 hz with software unfortunately, as there is so much unavoidable traffic noise near where I tend to record here in MA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
melinda:

Yes, and since I'm a novice I wouldn't know what bells or whistles I'd want anyway.
Avatar 8:44pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

I think a good mic will enhance even the cheapest recorder but imo the best is just to get started with whatever you can and figure out it's shortcomings as you go along
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
coelacanth∅:

there's this- www.wirerealm.com...
...probably not the best review out there, but a start.
that dr-05 does have a feature i would use that,as far as i know(!) mine doesn't have...the speed playback.
