I went on a candy run for Halloween earlier today, and asked Muslim kids to tell me what was and wasn't acceptable for them. I got it way wrong last year, so I thought I'd ask real experts

@fred: Caramelled pigs feet is right out, definitely haram.

Thanks, Brian, but it looks like this one's over a watermark that's not there on the blog page. Wondering if Meghan downloaded it from some intermediate source. Shopify says the shop page for it is currently unavailable.

Is candy with bacon _flavoring_ OK ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
fred:

@fred: I guess so, bacon-flavored stuff usually doesn't contain any actual pork product. Bacon candy sounds gross to me though
  12:30pm
Listener Robert:

Gross? The 2 foods you can mix w any food to improve it are bacon & chocolate. Which means chocolate-covered bacon would be out of this world!
  12:33pm

@listener robert- it totally is, i've made it

Is bacon better than Pork roll/Taylor ham?

grits will always be awful, no matter what you mix them with.

I love grits, it took me moving away from the south to appreciate them. Shrimp & cheese grits are awesome!

@ngh: it taking moving away to appreciate stuff seems to be a theme with you lately. Do these hold up when you go back?
Avatar 12:45pm

As a teenager in FL, when exploring the swampy woodlands, I found a bunch of log benches arranged into a pentagram 20m in diameter under a 100+ year old live oak w/ a fire pit in the middle. I thought, "woah, cool!".

P-90:

Yes, McCartney-sequel. Also perhaps the most horrifyingly melancholy and downbeat Top Ten song ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
fred:

@fvh: is there a Hall and Oates cover of it?
Avatar 12:47pm
northguineahills:

@fred: well, I still love grits and Skynyrd, so, I suppose it's still holding up. As for missing NYC, I'd kill for a decent bagel w/ lox, cream cheese, tomato and onions, and capers.
Avatar 12:47pm
fred von helsing:

Urban legends you hear as a kid. Like, if you eat the entire apple you'll get poisoned. Well it turns out there IS a microscopic amount of cyanide in them, but more likely it's propaganda from Big Apple to get you to toss out a goodly chunk.
  12:47pm
P-90:

"McCartney-esque" , not "-sequel" . Damn Aoutocorrect
Avatar 12:48pm
fred von helsing:

@fred If there is, I could make it my life's work to eradicate it from the historical record, 1984 style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
fred:

@fvh: Maybe they could teem up with Bryan Adams and record it for some charity. A thing you'd look for like Dan Bodah lusts for a Billy Joel cassingle

I agree, it's odd how the serial killer craze has died down. Maybe the field got saturated by the ubiquitous lame crime shows like Criminal Minds (a.k.a. Pseudo-Respectable Torture Porn for Midwestern Suburbanites a.k.a. the Crappy Show That Can't Admit It's Basically the Same Shit as a Grade-ZZZ Horror Movie).
Avatar 1:42pm
fred von helsing:

Maybe the "craze" died down cos we got collectively more sane. As a society. Ya never know.
Avatar 1:43pm
glenn:

huh. i think society is basically batshit craycray right now, but maybe that's just me.
  1:44pm

Digging this Wheatus, Meghan. Yet another artist you've turned me on to. (Maybe I should have been familiar with them already, but I wasn't.) This guitar bit at the end is nice.
  1:44pm
Alex in Illinois:

The Hillside Strangler is not a killer. It is a stretch of highway where 3 lanes narrow down to 1 lane right after a ramp from another busy highway.

An additional ramp was added at the end of the George Ryan reign so that it is less of an issue.
Avatar 1:48pm
fred von helsing:

@gless A delayed reaction. I'll betcha Trump a.k.a. Emperor Hiroheeto can Make Serial Killers Great Again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
ⓘⓚⓔ:

Yeah, it's strange to hear anybody posit that society is more sane now. Institutional fearmongering about serial killers now seems quaint and relatively *sane* (if trashy) now that fearmongering has moved in a more political direction and has moved down to new & crazier depths. Drumpf would rather stir up fear and loathing of immigrants and brown people and LOSING YER JERBS. They've replaced serial killers in some folks' minds.
  1:54pm
P-90:

Yes, some of the Poltergeist cast were VERY pissed off to find out they were working with actual human skeletons, without being told in advance.
  1:58pm
Alex in Illinois:

Really? Years ago, one of my neighbors and his son were loading skulls into his hatchback. He showed me how they were from the same mold and told me that you need a special license to have real ones.
  2:00pm
Alex in Illinois:

Maybe it's an Illinois state law about requiring a license to use real human skeletons and skulls.
Avatar 2:05pm

you mean the new jersey devils are actually named after something? i had no idea.
