Webhamster Henry:

from Reuters:
He is due to step down on April 30, 2019 after spending much of his nearly three decades on Japan's throne seeking to soothe the wounds of World War Two.
His abdication is the first by a Japanese monarch in about two centuries. He will be succeeded by his heir, 57-year old Crown Prince Naruhito.
Once considered divine, Japan's emperor is defined in the post-war constitution as a "symbol of the state and of the unity of the people", but has no political power.
  12:38pm
rbrt:

"The constitution provides for a parliamentary system of government and guarantees certain fundamental rights. Under its terms, the Emperor of Japan is "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people" and exercises a purely ceremonial role without the possession of sovereignty."

I think the emperor gives "permission" on important legislations, and also performs sacred shinto rituals.

I think Japan had a few empresses, and they came close to changing the succession law until a male grandson of the current emperor was born
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm

Women can't ascend to the throne. The next emperor only has a daughter so there are some talks of making changes, but it seems unlikely that it will actually happen.

@james I probably would have enjoyed modern Japanese history more. In my experience, in elementary school and middle school, we always started from ancient times, and then ran out of time at the end of year, so we would do modern times super briefly. Now that I think, maybe teachers didn't know how to deliver that time period without being political?, I don't understand.

Hi Doctorjazz! Merry Christmas to you too, P-90!

@Rickwaukee @1:40 "security blanket" is a good way of explaining this! I do feel like keeping an emperor was like having that to tuck many Japanese people in. Sounds especially funny if I think about the fact that maternal logic being dominant in the Japanese culture.

I personally prefer the path Germans took - to make a clear break from the past - but I think it's interesting how different people react differently, and some people don't seem to be capable of handling some difficult history.

@Mayuko Some descendants have a harder time giving up their cultural "pride" than the actual do-bads - they don't have any direct personal actions to feel guilty about, so they shrug and say, No big deal, I'm just keeping MY history alive. When they should be running as fast as they can from it - like the Germans.

Oddly enough, it was through MacArthur's initiative that help convince others in the State Dept to convince Truman to exonerate and keep the emperor, as a means of unification and keep the Japanese anti-communist. Considering how utterly destroyed Japan was, and the post-war trauma they endured, I believe it was probably the right move in the short term. Otherwise, MacArthur was a blowhard dick, but hey, even dicks can make the right considered decision.
