Subways are socialist according to our Gub'ner. Along with trains. Trains are the worst. Alack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
David D:

Does he think that's good or bad? Sorry I'm a bit out of touch over here.
Avatar 🚂 4:43pm

@βrian:Hey, my guvner, Skeletor Scott vetoed a high-speed train line from Daytona to Orlando to Tampa, when the Fed money was already earmarked. w/ expansions projected to Miami and Jacksonville. At least the Central FL SunRail commuter rail that runs a good 50 miles/80km was under construction before he took office. Then again, it stops short of the airport b/c Disney wants to bilk people w/ its shuttle busses (there were plans for it to go to Disney at the airport, originally).

Follwoing on NGH's comment, cars are a fundamental part of the American psyche, even more so than guns (believe it or not). That, I suspect, is the reason for GOP hostility toward mass transit of any kind. *Real* Americans get around by driving in their cars, dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
David D:

Hey NGH and Parq, sounds about right. In Germany, both seem to get a lot of love.
Avatar 🚂 4:54pm
northguineahills:

There is good mass bus transit here in Gainesville, but if you're more then 5km from the downtown and/or campus, or going to the mall or one of the super wal-marts, you'll be waiting at least 20 mins.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

Alpha Blondy, it's been a while since i saw him (Lausanne 1986). Thought for a second this was going to be the wonderful Easy Star All Stars. That said, Monsieur Blondy is doing a dine job.

David, you have no idea (or maybe you do, since you grew up here) how ardently conservative Americans envy Germany its no-speed-limit autobahns.
  4:59pm
Dean:

Re: cars, I loathe them. Blech. But I adore a long-running show out of Los Angeles' KPFK, The Car Show, which manages to stimulate and inform.

I also think driving should be very strictly regulated. One moving violation, you're out. No more driving.
Avatar 🚂 5:00pm
northguineahills:

@Parq: When you have ordnung ingrained into the culture, you have less of a chance of idiots accidentally, or purposely trying to kill you.

My neck of the woods, yesterday: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2018/01/29/1-injured-rollover-crash-downtown-berkeley/

This occurred at an intersection heavy with foot and cycle traffic.

I love to drive, but I prefer it not to be a necessity. I love being able to walk/bike everywhere come the weekends. i can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the MTA.
Avatar 🚂 5:04pm

@Dean: I like how that one guy had a Warhol/Velvets banana sticker on his laptop.
  5:05pm
Dean:

Ha! Didn't notice it 'til you mentioned it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
David D:

There are in fact a few parties here who would like to introduce a general speed limit for the Autobahn, we shall see...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
Parq:

U.S. conservatives will insist that Germany's highway fatality rate is no higher than ours, or some will even say it's lower. I always wondered, so I just looked it up. According to Wikipedia, the German rate is about three times the U.S. rate.
Avatar 🚂 5:13pm
northguineahills:

On portions of I-90 in MT, the speed limit is posted as 80mph/130kmh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
David D:

Parq: It is ridiculous to claim that higher speeds make the roads safer, whatever the statistics. Having said that, are you sure about that?
  5:18pm
Dean:

I'm kinda fond of the "It gets me off the road more quickly" weasley rationale for speeding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
David D:

Dean: There is a justification waiting to be used for just about anything.
  5:22pm
Dean:

Indeed. And "justification" is such a polite way of saying "excuse."
  5:24pm
Dean:

Steven Wright classics:

A cop stopped me for speeding. He said, "Why were you going so fast?" I said, "See this thing my foot is on? It's called an accelerator. When you push down on it, it sends more gas to the engine. The whole car just takes right off. And see this thing? This steers it."

I was going 70 miles an hour and got stopped by a cop who said, "Do you know the speed limit is 55 miles per hour?" "Yes, officer, but I wasn't going to be out that long..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
David D:

Yes, trying to be polite, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm

Steven Wright has had a good take on just about everything.

"You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"
Avatar 🚂 5:35pm

@Parq: I wouldn't worry, I'm sure Dr. Congo will fix you up in no time if you were in an accident in Kinshasa.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm

I'm picturing Dean's dog (whose name is, let's say, Frankie) sitting and staring blankly as his kids call "Come here, Stay" and shriek with giggles.
Avatar 🚂 6:00pm
northguineahills:

Well, Stanley echoed what I was going to type....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm
David D:

Thanks Stanley - yes, hard to get enough!
  6:02pm
Dean:

Fortunately for poor it, we have no dog, but we do have a cat, and yes, the kids have tried to non-plus the cat with that Steven Wright joke. You can guess the ending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
David D:

Did the cat find it none too amusing?
  6:04pm
Dean:

The cat pretty much yawned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
David D:

Yes, anything else could lead to the revocation of its cat license.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Parq:

Since the cat presumably stares blankly when they call it by its own name...
  6:08pm
Dean:

Depends on the time of day, i.e., feed bowl refresher or not. I've assigned it several names. It's given name is Wednesday, but of course there's the generic Kitty, which sounds like Kitchen (which expands to Kitchen Window), which sounds like Chicken (which expands to Chicken Window), and so forth.
  6:09pm
Dean:

*Its given name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
David D:

You need to use their secret cat names. Or so I've read.
Avatar 🚂 6:13pm
northguineahills:

I have no pets, but all of my neighbors' cats seem to know I'm the go-to-guy for belly rubs. So, when I walk out my front door, or get home and walk out of my car, I'm mobbed by cats. I'm not a cat person, but I like interacting w/ animals. (my wife has always called me a cat/dog guy)
Avatar 🚂 6:16pm
northguineahills:

Nice Dave Holland!
Avatar 🚂 6:17pm
northguineahills:

@Dean: It's theme song should be Cibo Matto's "Know Your Chicken".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
David D:

Every cat should have its own theme song.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

That's right, NGH. Did I say something else (wouldn't be the first time)?
Avatar 🚂 6:54pm
northguineahills:

No, I just guessed it when you said near the same time when it finally came over on my phone.

I don't think I've heard Spanish pop sound like the French trying to sound British.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
