I went to a club in Brooklyn to see Billy Harper years back (the club was in Park Slope, on Flatbush Avenue, lasted a few months). I used to take my older daughter to shows at the time to "break her in" (it worked, she can identify Monk tunes along with Beyoncé...didn't work with my younger daughter, though). We talked to Billy Harper for a few minutes before his set, and he called out sweetly from the stage to my daughter at the beginning of the set. She still remembers it, as do I, it was a great gesture; he was such a sweet gentleman.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am dutchtheo:

Dark daughter of the lotus leaves that watch the Southern Sea!

Wan spirit of a prisoned soul a-panting to be free!

The muttered music of thy streams, the whisper of the deep,

Have kissed each other in God’s name and kissed a world to sleep.

The will of the world is a whistling wind, sweeping a cloud-swept sky,

And not from the East and not from the West knelled that

soul-waking cry,

But out of the South,—the sad, black South—it screamed from

the top of the sky,

Crying: “Awake, O ancient race!” Wailing, “O woman, arise!”

And crying and sighing and crying again as a voice in the

midnight cries,—

But the burden of white men bore her back and the white world

stifled her sighs.

The white world’s vermin and filth:

All the dirt of London,

All the scum of New York;

Valiant spoilers of women

And conquerers of unarmed men;

Shameless breeders of bastards,

Drunk with the greed of gold,

Baiting their blood-stained hooks

With cant for the souls of the simple;

Bearing the white man’s burden

Of liquor and lust and lies!

Unthankful we wince in the East,

Unthankful we wail from the westward,

Unthankfully thankful, we curse,

In the unworn wastes of the wild:

I hate them, Oh!

I hate them well,

I hate them, Christ!

As I hate hell!

If I were God,

I’d sound their knell

This day!

Who raised the fools to their glory,

But black men of Egypt and Ind,

Ethiopia’s sons of the evening,

Indians and yellow Chinese,

Arabian children of morning,

And mongrels of Rome and Greece?

Ah, well!

And they that raised the boasters

Shall drag them down again,—

Down with the theft of their thieving

And murder and mocking of men;

Down with their barter of women

And laying and lying of creeds;

Down with their cheating of childhood

And drunken orgies of war,—

down

down

deep down,

Till the devil’s strength be shorn,

Till some dim, darker David, a-hoeing of his corn,

And married maiden, mother of God,

Bid the black Christ be born!

Then shall our burden be manhood,

Be it yellow or black or white;

And poverty and justice and sorrow,

The humble, and simple and strong

Shall sing with the sons of morning

And daughters of even-song:

Black mother of the iron hills that ward the blazing sea,

Wild spirit of a storm-swept soul, a-struggling to be free,

Where ‘neath the bloody finger-marks thy riven bosom quakes,

Thicken the thunders of God’s Voice and lo! a world awakes!

@still b/p It is little read these days. It is about 2" by 1" if memory serves.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28am Brian in UK:

Was wondering if some Ethiopian polyphony might appear.

Might try two or three a day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Ethiopian polyphony. Even just speaking the phrase is music.
  11:32am Stanley:

Well, I for one, enjoyed those recordings
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am dutchtheo:

Brian in Uk i am not familiar with a Stendahl syndrome concerning poetry

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33am Sem:

Will there'll be polyphony of some sort? Wafers?
No matter, UM. I'll be there w/ bells...or bell bottoms on, or something.

Polyphony News!

Been in a work trance for 2.5 hr but hugely enjoying things. Always so frustrated that the Muslimgauze artist left us so horrifyingly early. His voice could've been helpful in parsing what the new millennium brought us.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:36am Brian in UK:

Doug, the music today seems to have had what shall we say, an edge to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

That's knife of you to say, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

He died so damn young, indeed, Listener James. Ugh.

Suck on a coffee suppressant, βrian?
Avatar 🥁 11:42am βrian:

I think this Mercy Sluts track will be good on my "Music by which to germinate hot peppers" playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Where is this song on the Scoville scale, βrian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

The Mercy Sluts = alias of The Poets Of Rhythm
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am dutchtheo:

would you have thought the Mercy Sluts is a German 1990's song; Jalapeno
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

The Whitefield Brothers are up in that Mercy Sluts mess, too. Who knew Germans could be so fonky?!
Avatar 🥁 11:48am βrian:

20,000 - 30,000 is my target range.

If I must listen to Mr. Tamborine man - i choose this version...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

I have sometimes used this Four of Clubs burner as a talkover track. What the hell have I been thinking?!

For some reason I wanted to hear the “for my boot heels to be wanderin’” line by those fellers once I realized what it was, but I missed it.

150K Scoville units my usual upper range when it comes to normal cooking. But once in a blue moon, when I need a pick-me endorphin surge, or if caffeine isn't working, I'll go to 1M. I usually keep under 50k under most dishes (that call for picante).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for a the tonnage of tunage, Doug. See you all shortly...
Avatar 🥁 11:57am βrian:

I'd like to hear a cover of Last Train to Scoville.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57am Sem:

I have some hot sauce which is called "Endorphin Rush."
Avatar 11:57am northguineahills:

2M gives me tunnel vision and tinnitus, eff that noise! (I was only stupid enough to eat a naga jolokia once, and only a half). I amend my former statement, closer to 500k is my stupid upper limit on those occasional days.
