Evening, Jesse and all!

Jesse Kaminsky:

Howdy James!
Avatar 7:03pm
northguineahills:

generically descriptive album title is generically descriptive.

(love the sounds).

Label name doesn't beat around the bush...
Avatar 7:05pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

yeah a little on the nose I suppose text wise. Hi northguineahills!
Avatar 7:05pm
βrian:

Strangely, I was just thinking about Germinal. Does this mine sustain itself on the flesh of humans?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
tom from Glasgow:

this is very enjoyable
Avatar 7:08pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey βrian! I think it's sonic tourism that runs the mine budget.
Hi Tom!
Avatar 7:09pm
TDK60:

Hello Jesse K. and neighbors. Translating for non-Spanish speakers, the album title = The Mine and Its Sound, right?
Avatar 7:10pm
βrian:

Hey, they're speaking 'murican!
Avatar 7:10pm
northguineahills:

Si, TDK60, but the context of mine is a little ambiguous.
Avatar 7:12pm
northguineahills:

Each Latino nation has each unique slang (and regions w/in said nations) and euphemisms and metaphors. I mostly translate everything literally, which make me lose the point half the time.
Avatar 7:13pm
βrian:

@NGH: How do you fare with Ibero-Spanish?
Avatar 7:14pm
northguineahills:

When my wife is w/ her friends and they transition from English to Mexi, I get completely lost. I understand what each individual word means, but it doesn't make sense to me.
Avatar 7:16pm
βrian:

Kind of like the Farside dog being scolded?
Avatar 7:16pm
northguineahills:

@βrian: Actually, much better then Mexican Spanish. Colombian is the easiest for me (for some reason), then Cuban (many Cuban friends in college). As long as I understand the phonemes from said Spaniard, I can pretty much understand everything they say if they don't speak too, too fast.
Avatar 7:17pm
TDK60:

Been tryin' to learn espa~nol on my own and in study groups for years, tho I'm lazy = peresozo. But I live in Nueva York so lots of chances to try. Pero, when I hear Dominican R. Spanish I'm lost.
Avatar 7:17pm
βrian:

"Claro como vaso," is the term I most remember.
Avatar 7:18pm
northguineahills:

@βrian: It's more like "Then the the street jumped over the corner, and then she laughed". The Mexi slang is is tricky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
listener james from westwood:

I could follow two native Spanish speakers reasonably well right after high school and 7 years of classes in the language. I took the AP exam and placed high enough not to take the language core requirement in college. My Spanish eroded within a year to recognizing cognates and some other vocab.
Avatar 7:19pm
northguineahills:

Most Spanish places in NYC don't even spell anything correctly (pet peeve of my wife).

I do understand a lot of Mexi, PR, DR, Colombian, and Espana slang, but some Mexi slang is just weird.
Avatar 7:20pm
βrian:

This prompts a recollection of piece of dialogue: "Toi, Miette. Moi, radiateur."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
gloomsday:

howdy, neighbors!
Avatar 7:22pm
βrian:

Do they even have language requirements in colleges anymore? They should.
Avatar 7:22pm
northguineahills:

I got into AP Spanish just by taking the test and knowing Latin root words, and also tested out language requirements as an undergrad, big mistake. You should have seen my first MySpace msg to my wife. (just b/c you know the mechanics of a language technically, doesn't mean you know the language).
Avatar 7:23pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey gloomsday! Hi TDK60!

Some so.

Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey Jeff!
  7:27pm
Jeff g. via app,:

Some (colleges) *do*.
Avatar 7:29pm
βrian:

Given our gubner's approach to higher education, I don't think he'd be too keen on folks learning to speak (no less think in) other languages.
Avatar 7:30pm
βrian:

Love this, by the way.
Avatar 7:33pm
TDK60:

Used to listen to shortwave radio --voices of Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, etc. // So, cruising down a canal at night...
Avatar 7:34pm
northguineahills:

Didn't know Myanmar sounded like my hood.
  7:35pm
Jeff g. via app,:

Hi! I should not comment while driving, for Abby number of reasons.

Abby knows what I'm taking about. Ok, hands on the wheel, 10 & 2.
Avatar 7:36pm
northguineahills:

I can think in other languages, sort of. The problem is my brain categorizes all non-English languages as 'foreign'. When I first met my in-laws, I was jumping from Spanish to German to Japanese. I couldn't help it. (now I can at least speak competent Spanish [still working on English])
Avatar 7:37pm
northguineahills:

@TDK60: I got a shortwave radio when I was 10 in Japan. It was a lifeline when I lived far from the American base, and got me into world culture.
Avatar 7:38pm
TDK60:

Wow NGH, a DXer real young. Did you get into decals?
Avatar 7:41pm
northguineahills:

@TDK60: No, but I was listening all the time, I found radio stations in AK, then Taiwan, Russia, and all over. I kept on trying to find somewhere I never heard of and ID the language and the station.
Avatar 7:42pm
TDK60:

There's a podcast --Shortwave Report I think, weekly roundup. // These are some jazz-punk Crows
Avatar 7:43pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Pull up Dave!
Avatar 7:44pm
northguineahills:

When I was a kid in Japan, I once put out two 15 lbs of garbage. Before I went to the school bus stop I saw I bunch of crows carry them off into the woods (they're large in Japan, over a foot tall)
Avatar 7:49pm
βrian:

We live amidst a murder of crows right here in the city. I like crows, generally, but what a clamor!
Avatar 7:50pm
northguineahills:

you want to stay on right side of things, when it comes to corvids, βrian.
Avatar 7:53pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

They don't forget and may or may not forgive, depends on the bird
Avatar 7:54pm
βrian:

I hear they like peanuts.
Avatar 7:59pm
βrian:

This neighbor's noise sounds much better than our crow neighbors.
Avatar 8:01pm
βrian:

Maybe I should put some nosh on offer: peanuts seasoned with Crowzac. Let's get those birds happy!
Avatar 8:02pm
TDK60:

What is it about crows? They're bothersome jesters, still mysterious as if sent by some power to pester us "advanced" apes!
Avatar 8:04pm
βrian:

gloomsday, too!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Ike:

Funny thing is, AFTER I "borrowed" and started using that Internet cat gif, I adopted a new cat and she started carrying off my sandals and chewing on them! She's never even seen the gif!
Avatar 8:12pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

check your cats browser history recently?
Avatar 8:12pm
Mayuko:

Good evening, Jesse and all!
Avatar 8:13pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey Mayuko!
Avatar 8:14pm
northguineahills:

lultz, Ike!
Avatar 8:14pm
βrian:

I once had a cat who would register protest of extended absences by dragging articles of clothing into public spaces, usually pathways.

When I began to find socks and underwear at the entryway, I knew I had some 'splaining to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Ike:

ROTFL!
Avatar 8:20pm
northguineahills:

Of all of my neighbor's cats that I give belly rubs to, the alpha, a Manx, has mostly mostly made my porch his territory, and scratches at my screen door. (when he isn't around the others will to, but the first hint of him, they'll scatter)
Avatar 8:20pm
northguineahills:

I somehow missed this Ambarchi on Touch.

Time-share kitties are an excellent perk, depending on where you live.

Avatar 8:32pm

Is that "Bells End" or "Bell's End."
(Just asking for @listener james from westwood)

Believe it's "Bells End"

Avatar 8:43pm

Is this the same Morgan Fisher who made film?
Avatar 8:44pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

I think maybe? He was super active in music stuff in the UK and then moved to Japan in the 80's and recorded that Satie record.
Avatar 8:46pm
