@queems: I don't hear that. Yeah, must be a ghost in your machine.

@Linda Lee: oh is that the connection? Haunt=haunt?? That’s interesting—that actually makes a lot of sense.
Avatar 7:13pm

negative connotations come from racism. period.

i always thought so, Emily ..
Avatar 7:13pm
Jeff Moore:

@melinda: You mean it isn't spelled "Aint Bea"?
Avatar 7:14pm
kimzilla:

A haint in your hard drive, the new gremlin.
  7:15pm
Emily:

@Linda Lee: truth. Because if you can make a culture’s important beliefs look evil or scary or even silly, it’s another way to discount the culture and place its members on the fringe of society. Another way to discriminate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
melinda:

@Jeff haha

Kate:

what can heal you can also harm you...true for all medical practices
  7:17pm

@melinda: how cool!
Avatar 7:17pm

@emily ~ yes. dehumanizing the 'other' is also essential for colonialism.
Avatar 7:17pm
kimzilla:

@Ken, I keep wanting to put vodou in different sentences now. Vodou want me to share some examples?
  7:17pm

@queems are you sure it ISN’T a tiny man trying to get out?

FWIW, Jews have a history of writing prayers in tiny scrolls and putting them somewhere. For example, the Mezuzah. It’s basically a tiny, hidden prayer scroll on a doorway.
Avatar 7:23pm
kimzilla:

there are some weird little glitches coming through that were not part of the original recordings, there are in fact haints in the hard drive!
  7:23pm
JakeGould:

And Japanese culture has deep respect for objects. So much so there are temples for dolls and such. But nobody really demonizes that.
Avatar 7:23pm

interesting! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
ultradamno:

Doesn't that sort of how Golems work as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
ultradamno:

Inserting tiny scrolls with instructions, that is..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Richard S:

Golems are human-like constructs that have the "name of God" (the "Tetragrammaton") written on a speciallly prepared piece of paper and then placed in their mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
melinda:

Haints in the Hard Drive could be the follow-up to Ghost in the Machine.
  7:25pm
Ghoffman:

where is this woman located, i want to meet her and learn
  7:25pm
Emily:

her book has got to be great to read.
  7:35pm
JakeGould:

Well, Passover is pretty dark and spooky. Lamb’s blood on doors to protect kids from death? The plagues are basically curses. There’s a lot of creepy spiritualism in mainstream religions.
  7:36pm
Emily:

@thanks, Kate! That’s Kim’s work :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm

man, she is wonderful
Avatar 7:36pm

Funny, Richard S, there was a listener that offered his services of transcribing our episodes, but I didn't know how that would be helpful... until this request!
Avatar 7:37pm
Linda Lee:

there's no reason to think an alien culture exceptionally ridiculous and/or wicked unless there's a vested interest in 'othering'.. & the vested interests are mainly capitalistic.
  7:38pm
Emily:

@Linda Lee that is a really excellent point.
Avatar 7:38pm
Linda Lee:

(never mind enforcing dominion over all creation as a 'blessed' endeavor!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
ultradamno:

@JakeGould much of them artlessly co-opted from pre-xtian religions in the process of overtaking them (making them creeper still)
  7:40pm
Kate:

The abolition of petition prayer, that would be very helpful.
Avatar 7:40pm
Linda Lee:

no kiddin!
  7:40pm
Emily:

ultradamno: right? So many things taken from Pagan religions present in Christianity, no?
  7:41pm
Emily:

@Kate what do you mean?
Avatar 7:41pm
Linda Lee:

@Emily ~ who really thinks eggs & rabbits have anything to do with the Blessed Virgin? ask the goddess Ishtar! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
ultradamno:

No elves or house trees in the bible.
  7:41pm
JakeGould:

I have loopy family members who on one breath will be amazed by the galaxy, and the next cursing efforts to search for extraterrestrial life since that would trigger an alien invasion.

Anyway, E.T. is one of the few films to portray aliens as friendly and kind. Otherwise“aliens” are the “others” and must be killed.
Avatar 7:42pm
kimzilla:

This is crazy right, that shark migrations changed due to the bodies dropping off the slave ships. I heard the same story about vultures and the Civil War.
  7:42pm
Emily:

@Linda Lee: haha exactly!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Richard S:

Emily, the usual rationale is that the early Church fathers, when they were trying to convert people, figured that an easy way to do it would be to adopt and adapt their traditions.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

@kimzilla ~ makes sense if you understand why animals migrate.
  7:43pm
Emily:

@Richard, oh yes, I think I have heard that!
  7:45pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

If all evidence of Christianity was wiped out tomorrow, we would still continue to throw big solstice parties.
Avatar 7:47pm
kimzilla:

Doesn't all of this just make sense. It's crazy how misunderstood their religion is, it's quite thoughtful and nature focused.
  7:47pm
Kate:

@Emily: Her idea that god is what connects us, not a separate being that saves us.
Avatar 7:48pm
kimzilla:

@Kate Right?!

It's so cool to see people who are so wonderfully *comfortable* with their faith that they can have a sense of humor with it.
Avatar 7:56pm
Linda Lee:

at this stage of our species' existence we'd really best have a spiritual life of some kind, individually. strict materialism is killing us.
