I'm already taking advantage of the government stimulants package, seeing that I'm still up at this late hour. Will probably drift of pretty soon, though. Thanks for the show, Sinéad. Hi, mariano.

Good to see you manning the helm, Sinead. Hey Ken - government stimulants might just be the ticket.

Good morning everybody – sunny weather here ... Thanks Sinead for the show, even if it is a re-run, hoping that things will go back to normal as soon as possible! If they do, we all will appreciate the "boring" normal much more than before I guess ...

Hey Hugo! It's a re-run! I hope to set up some kind of studio so that I can pre-record next week's show. But I am here with you from the confines of my boudoir! :)

dan_vallejo:

this song did blow my mind when I first heard it as a freshman in college (2000), back in the days of napster, just unfettered explorations of other people's music collections but without any organizing principles, so I didn't pull down any other sonic youth tracks with it and it was just a standalone brilliant piece.
  3:33am
dan_vallejo:

Glad you're home and staying safe. Was just looking at healthweather.us and some of the encouraging trends from all the staying at home. I hope they keep up.

Hi Dan. Yeah Bull Heather is an epic song. With you on IDLES too. LOVE LOVE LOVE them! Also with you on people staying home. Peeps got to stay home in order to conquer this!

I hadn't heard idles before, is he referring to the roman king? Good reference if so. Nicely surreal.

IDLES is an absolute thrill to see live. I was blown away by them.

That IDLES song was terrific. Great show, flashback or no.

dan_vallejo:

Hugo, makes sense, they sound like they would be great already. Stiff little fingers makes me smile for sure. Spent many good times with the rough trade collection wanna buy a bridge and I remember, the one time I tried to play in a rock group was in pittsburgh, two other folks who were both total oddballs and we found each other on craigslist. The older guy who was a much better musician than us had this whole list of rough trade types that he could play perfectly without any effects or anything. I was still in my psychedelic phase, with very few chops, and it was hard to keep up. Young woman drummer who hosted us in her house and was just happy to have a chance to hit her drums as hard as possible, aand get totally lost, haha.

We didn't get any good recordings, but I think it was good for our mental health to each have some distant friends at the time.

Hey Hugo. Oh man. Tell me about it. I was hardly able to control myself when I got to see them at Terminal 5. Unbelievable. Their show at Brooklyn Steel too... Their sheer power live and ability to entertain... Not to mention their unabashed positivity.

Avatar 3:51am
Sinead:

Hey Dan_Vallejo - Elastica stole from others. Connection from Elastica is a rip off of Wire's Three Girl Rhumba and they never got a penny out it.
  3:53am
dan_vallejo:

"building a wall of books between us in our bed" is apropos actually, I've heard of multiple families where the partners have had to create divides in the house between the two of them. Reminded me of 'it happened one night' the walls of jericho. Not the same or anything, but couldn't help but think of these things. And Fritz Leiber's imaginary dividing line in 'Our lady of darkness' in his bed, where he forms a barrier at first and then a wife made of books in his bed to replace his wife who died ilr.

Oh yeah, haha, thats totally true about elastica! God, discovering wire later blew my mind though. fly in the ointment, pink flag. I wound up spending way more time with wire and way more money on them than I ever did elastica. But good point, I had forgotten those were still sore points for people, and rightly so. But you know, I was a dumb american from pennsylvania with no money and a radio, so I didn't know at the time.
Avatar 3:59am
Sinead:

Hey Dan. Ah - hey - you weren't to know then! Spoke to Graham from Wire about it. But yeah - Wire... That is a band!
  4:02am
dan_vallejo:

It was a treasure for me to discover Three Girl Rhumba, and it opened up a whole new world for me. Seeing Wire in cambridge at the middle east is a treasured memory. They seemed to be having a lot of fun playing and the audience was appreciative. Not as big a tour as they deserved, I imagined, but it was such an eye opener to see world famous artists that I respected doing a small tour like that. Helped me to recalibrate my own expectations.

Oh, just read your post, reminds me of talking to Laetitia Sonami about Imogen Heap. One of Laetitia's friends who works with Heap was trying to say how great a person she was, and Laetitia wouldn't have it, the only time I heard her talk ill of someone else. Heap never gave her any credit for all her work on a data glove.

Good morning. I hope the quarantine ain't affecting your love and necessity for FMU. In Armenia, everyone in our major cities is closed except for food and pharmacies. Haha, you need to print out or hand write a piece of paper documenting why you're out of your house, where you're going, why, and when you'll return. At least we live in in a village so our fears of infection are rather low. My BIL visiting from China loves your show, Sinead.

HELLO WORLD. may everyone be another day closer to "nice"
  4:19am
dan_vallejo:

Diezel, have you seen the data from Kinsa on healthweather.us? It's very encouraging for these kinds of quarantine efforts. The us response has been very haphazard, but a lot of people have been voluntarily distancing all over the us, and it seems to have changed things noticeably. Encouraging for people in small communities who wonder if their efforts are making any difference. It's not complete because it doesn't really speak to what the impact will still be on the health systems, but it is nice to see daily updated info on the effects of changes without being able to see real covid-19 testing happening.

Sinead, can I be terribly rude and ask you to maybe name 3-5 of your favourite artists of the year so far that we can check out during this vexing time?
  4:59am
dan_vallejo:

Diezel, I know you're in armenia, I just meant to say that we're in the dark here as well, but there is this company that sold bluetooth thermometers for years that has been putting up their numbers. Turns out staying at home makes a difference, even though right now it doesn't feel like it. Or at least their data seems to imply so. Anyway, it's worth digging into because I think it's representative. Things might still go all to hell here, but this is real time data that can be observed from day to day to see the outcome of a real scattershot attempt to physically isolate.
  5:02am
dan_vallejo:

I think it also matches what you described, in the states it's more like the cities are isolating (there's some good videos of san francisco right now that show it like a ghost town) and for people in the smaller towns who may not be isolating as much, it seems like the data reflects that it's also good news for them. It sounds like you guys there are somewhat like us in the states.

aussies!!

dan_vallejo:

and honestly, I suppose the vallejo in my name explains why I am thinking about it in this way. It's very blue-collar, and though I am working from home, many people here don't have the option untill the government steps in, and it seems many people aren't willing to default on all their debts and hope for the government to step in later.
