Just about to go ballistic over how doomed we are after quick subway ride to Manhattan and back to Queens and then Oscar Peterson gets me to pause and take a deep breath. Phew. Thank you david w. Now to shower the cooties off.

last night, some cops came to my parent's cul-de-sac w/ lights blazing and spot lights, and one cop walked up the driveway w/ a flashligh, using my white male priviledge, I came out through the garage and asked them what they were doing? They said they got a call that there were two black males in the cul-de-sac. I told them I was star gazing out there and saw nothing. I went back inside and they left 45 minutes later. Then I realized the biracial couple across the street have two adult sons. I can't wait to get out of suburban Jax.

Mighty Sam passed in 2015. What a voice and how did he ever get hooked up with an Iranian activist/singer? Amazing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
WR:

Yes, Iran has had pretty intense censorship and repression. Am not up to date on situation recently.

And David w, I thought you would tell us how this collaboration came about. ;)). I must say McClain is bringing it on every level beyond my expectations having seen him a couple times in the 80s. I must not have been paying proper attention.
Avatar 5:33pm
northguineahills:

The other thing that got to me, the cops were in tactical gear and had stun grenades in their vest. A bit excessive.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
WR:

I think many police are in siege mentality. Too many.
Avatar 5:35pm
northguineahills:

@WR: their censorship has gotten worse, due to tensions w/ Saudi Arabia/UAE and the US. So, the hardliners and clerics are taking advantage of that as they also know they don't have the demographic advantage to maintain control w/o absolutism....

Once watched a shadow puppet drama with gamelan all night performance when I lived in Santa Barbara, CA. Sort of thing doesn't happen to me here in New Hampshire.
Correct any of this that's off :
Gamelan is like one great instrument but it's played by many people. Compare our trap drum set which is short for 'contraption' because it puts several drums & cymbals together for one person - an anomaly in almost all traditions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

Contraption! I never made that connection.

I don't know about Balinese, but with Sundanese Gamelan, the bonang and jengglong (and goong) work together, while the peking and panerus work together (sometimes four hands on each). The drums and suling and voice parts often run independently, and the gambang just is filling in rhythm most of the time.
