Listener comments!
9:05am : Is this a first? No Hank Levine?
Nevermind, let's talk about PJ's cd being in the top 10 of 2011.9:40am : you should do all mellotron next, bob9:46am : ah yes prog rock fusion show i can dig it9:47am : Nice!9:51am : Yes, that was one of Becker's themes, but ISTR it wasn't the only one. Can't remember the others, though, so I could be confabulating.9:53am : It had those stills from the show synchronized to the drumbeats.9:54am : What I can't remember is whether before they had the stills, they used the same music or not.9:55am : As a kid never knew how Happy Feeling ended because they would always cut away to a commercial.10:01am : I get it, it's a Becker suite!10:02am : Thanks for filling in that gap in my memory, Danke Schoen being the other theme.10:09am : Bob's string project is interesting, because it gives us a chance to pay attention to stringwork that doesn't stay with our memories of the song itself. Yet in many instances, a rehearing merely confirms that the string sweetening tended to be saccharine, and kind of lame.
MrMucho's suggestion for a mellotron special brings to mind the use (&abuse) of all synthesized keyboards to replicate strings as an alternative to stringwork, a sound more portable and under the control of the band, rather than the producer--thus a dialectical alternative. I think this decline in the use of string sections, for a decade or more, forced string players to use styles not so readily replicated on keyboard, often gutsier, more so on the margins of pop (aka FMU playlist). The dialectic continues!10:18am : Is a majority of what Bob plays from his personal oollection o the record library?10:22am : Great to hear some Carlos Salzedo. He was an incredible innovator of the harp. My sister studied with his widow.10:25am : thanks for sandy...10:25am : there was the childhood innocense during the late 50s and 60s. youd be sitting with your bowl of cereal withyour brothers watching sandy becker chuck mccan wonderama courageous cat n minte mouse felix the cat spunky n tadpole we were chilren and we were getting big doses o sci fi b movies n psychedelia. yesteryear was ok in my books beautiful ben button cut bob10:56am : Nice Chico Hamilton. I saw Hamilton play last month at a small club on Avenue A. He's 90 years old and still swinging on the drums and writing great harmonies for three woodwinds.10:58am : Thanks for another great show, Bob. Have a good week.11:00am : may i reiterate your sentimets exactly t zero11:01am : Sometime in the late 70s I found myself in the elevator with Sandy Becker - just the two of us -and I was just totally speechless.3:18pm : great show, I really like the strings theme you've been doing. Especially enjoyed hearing the Thomas Newman Six Feet Under theme...one of the best tv show themes ever.
