Part of what I wrote on Jerry & AM on another site:
It is indeed a quandary as to why/how they signed so many artists that ended up in the cutout bin 45s and LPs eventually, yet MANNNNNY ended up being keepers in OUR collections today. They had all these MOR records selling well and so many pop/rock great 45s NOT selling well shows some kind of issue with promotion fer sure. They had Boyce-Hart songwriters that could have been like Holland-Dozier-Holland writing hits for A&M artists and even fake artists (like Buddah did) but really did nothing with them. OR Burt Bacharach could have teamed up with Nick DeCaro or Evie Sands at A&M and could have had hits that way too. They had Emitt, but his A&M output was barely recognized, until we went to Dunhill. Free, Cocker, Parade, Eternitys Children, Beefheart, Move, Procol harum, Herbie Mann, T Rex, Long John baldry.

They had controversial Phil Ochs. They grabbed Ronnettes, ruby & Romantics, Checkmates, Ike & Tina and other black acts about same time--what was that plan? Was there one? PHIL SPECTOR as a producer too?

I thought records ended up in the cutout bin because labels would ship to stores and buy them back to up the sales numbers for the charts.

Wow! I've driven through the stretch of Northern Indiana between Chicago and Michigan countless times. I've stopped in most of the cities off the highway at this point. It blows my mind that great bands played in cities along that stretch. These the only times you'd catch a decent band in northern Indiana is if you happen to be at the rest stop at the same time.

One of McCartney's stock stories - recounting the moment Ringo first played behind them ...& they look @ each other & think - YEAH - this is it ...here we go
- & gets a little verklempt. Love that stuff...

These guys are pretty good, musically. But these are all covers. Can they write a hit song?

looking at the menu, i suspect "northern" is a marketing gimmick rather than an indication of the regional cuisine. i don't see any of the usual staples of "northern" or even "northwestern" chinese cuisine. it might still be good, but where the hell are all of the noodle dishes, and the lamb???

It's weird. It's practically - we'd call it Appropriation now - the Brits co-opting all these Black USA Originals. But again (as with Cream a bit later, & in a different way) - it's Morphing. You think of say Jimmy Cliff saying - I Create ...& they Mutate. But - Mutation is an essential quality of Life & its Process as well...
& being my particular Age - it was the Brits who introduced all of it. Tho here in the USA. Which - again - is weird & in some ways Wrong. Yet it was Real...
Avatar 3:44pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I guess for the general Brit Invasion Wave - there was a Transition from assimilating U.S. R&B & RnR &tc. - & finding their own Voices completely - & very significantly... Accents, obviously.

I understand where you are coming from there. Every generation has covers of earlier era songs and we often think the new versions are better and never heard the first one. I just dont think the Hollies 63/4 covers ever took me to where their A side 45s did to the moon! Of course, when they started SAMPLING old songs to make new--CMON MAN! You cant even make your own music?

For one thing - the Social context Now regarding Sources is a whole lot (completely?) different than in say 1963.
Back then - you *were* pretty exclusive if you knew much about (say) Blues. & it *was* revelatory to most when you Interpreted it...
