Yeah always heard 8 Miles High is mostly about the BYrdS' tour of England & how weird it all was for them. Gene did have anxiety re flying - & Roger said 'you can't be a BYrd if you can't Fly!'... & it is an anxious song, after all. & then there's acid... One of the formative Psych songs clearly. & of course yes - Crosby always noted that on their TourBus they had a tape with Coltrane & Ravi Shankar they played repeatedly.

Yes, Gene's phobia was extreme -- he even rejoined the band after Crosby left and then quit soon thereafter, once again precipitated by the need to fly. And yeah, that sounds like Roger.
