Yeah always heard 8 Miles High is mostly about the BYrdS' tour of England & how weird it all was for them. Gene did have anxiety re flying - & Roger said 'you can't be a BYrd if you can't Fly!'... & it is an anxious song, after all. & then there's acid... One of the formative Psych songs clearly. & of course yes - Crosby always noted that on their TourBus they had a tape with Coltrane & Ravi Shankar they played repeatedly.

Yes, Gene's phobia was extreme -- he even rejoined the band after Crosby left and then quit soon thereafter, once again precipitated by the need to fly. And yeah, that sounds like Roger. They were not a group with much camaraderie, but as your example shows, they respected each other's talent, if grudgingly.

If TheMonkees were like a previous iteration of TheBeatles for younger kids coming along who hadn't 'got hip' yet - one thinks of TheTroggs as emulating - & carrying forward - the earlier affectations of the Kinks & Who. An early manifestation of Punk in that it is already a Simplification & a deliberate Reduction in a then evolving Form. To lasting effect.

Well, if you bought the ATCO 45 of Wild Thing, you were smart. It had the 2nd Fontana A side "With a Girl Like You" on B side! Quite an interesting set of both 45s out at same time and those in the know bought the double A side 45!
