Wow I am honestly shocked to learn that Love didn’t have hits. I guess because I grew up in LA and listened to alternate radio - they seemed major. Have their records, etc.

Agree about the Doors - loved when I was 14, now ugh.

Kotzwinkled that wedding is... wow.

Elektra easily could have afforded to promote both bands, and would have loved both bands to have been huge. Love wasn't interested. So when the band doesn't give a shit, why should Elektra keep trying?

DG & seen from the other direction - the myths actually obscure the work. I have a strong anti-populist (popularity) streak myself... & it's still true.

A band or artist can't control the mythology that fans or writers put on their musical legacy, especially after a key member dies. If Love had done tours and appearances to promote their music the history may definitely have been different in terms of nationwide success. But they weren't interested.

Once upon a time Love were among the Nuggets set in broad general regard - tho of course some knew better already. As Iggy said to The Ramones - not everybody is meant to be the big moneymakers...

Mike Sin:

When ,listening to music that is too "popular" and surrounded by "myth," take the track out of context and pretend you've just discovered it on a comp or it was unreleased at the time. It will help with a new appreciation.

Imagine if, say, "Break On Through" was cut by a band that disappeared a week after it was cut and it stayed in a vault for 30 years. Once released, it would be heralded as a major classic and WFMU would not stop playing it.

I've heard that Arthur Lee was also into very subliminal and at that time underground/trendy marketing. He started to walk around wearing one sandal and the other barefoot. He wanted people to recognize him as the guy with one sandal. "Who's that guy with one sandal?" "Oh, he's in that band". And that was one of his marketing ideas for promoting himself and his music, at least that's what I heard somewhere.
