Oh, shoot! I think I have even recommended this before, but Sheila, I think you would LOVE this book: SPACE OPERA, by Cathereynne M. Valente. It's basically about humanity's needing to prove itself to be a civilized species and thus allowed to survive by competing in a Eurovision-style song contest with all the other species of the galaxy. A love letter to David Bowie, Eurovision, song, and the possibility that we're not the worst. Can't recommend it enough!

(Not to be confused with Space Opera by Jack Vance, which is about an opera. In space. I mean, it has its charms, but still.)

IDK if it quite fits into the definition of 'soulful', but 'the fantastic planet' might be up your alley. It's a french-czech animated film from the 70s. There's an english dub, but it was produced by trash cinema master Roger Corman, so it's kinda cheesy, you may get more out of the original french version if you can find it

Rev Rab, totally. And I have read takes on it that it allegorizes the experiences of displaced Jewish European artists and intellectuals who had to flee to the states -- and Hollywood! -- before, during, and after the Holocaust.

I'm more books than movies with SF, I have to say. I don't think most SF movies really do much with what I love about SF: testing and probing the boundaries of what we think human beings are and can be.

Arrival is an excellent case study of that. The novella is brilliant. But I avoided it for a long time because I had seen the movie.

Claire Denis's High Life from a year or two back was excellent, though it's rough going sometimes.

It didn’t start out soulful but the TV series *Fringe* became soulful as it went along. At the start it seems like it’s just an X-Files knockoff, but it’s not. Much better than XF IMHO. It’s on IMDB TV (free w/ads). Now the producer of Fringe has a new show, Debris, on NBC and Peacock. It’s definitely going for soulful and emotional but I’d say only partly working so far.

My father had a habit of taking me to see inappropriate films when I was a kid. He took me to see Clockwork Orange when I was 12-ish. Whatever was playing we'd go see-Midnight Cowboy, Nashville, Night Of The Living Dead. Really expanded my film hoizons at an early age. Revolution Rabbit Nov 63: Five Million Years has been reissued, in the US, under its British title. One of the films I recommended above, The Endless, is very Lovecraftian. It's one of several low-budget films made by a couple of guys named Aaron Morehead and Justin Benson. Spring, Resolution and The Endless, all recommended. They have a new, bigger budget, film called Synchronic that misses the mark. Bigger budgets are often the downfall of indie directors.

The Lathe of Heaven - Ordinary guy George Orr discovers his dreams can change reality. TV movie faithfully based on a novel by Le Guin. The original used "With a Little Help from My Friends" by the Beatles, which led PBS to reportedly destroy the film negative because of copyright concerns. The version on Youtube and DVD uses a remake of the song, which is fine, but the video quality isn't so great (it is the original 2" tape master), but the film is. Watch it.

Ikarie XB-1 - Really fascinating B&W outer space epic from Chechoslovakia from 1963. I like to think that Kubrick watched this one and "Quatermass and the Pit" before cooking up "2001." Subtitles are OK, right?

Creation of the Humanoids - Tensions rise as androids are more closely incorporated into human society because of declining birth rates. VERY slow and EXTREMELY talky, BUT it has more ideas and plot points than any other five SF movies. Great makeup from Hollywood pro Jack Pierce (created the original Frankenstein makeup) and great cinematography by Oscar-winner Hal Mohr, with rich, saturated color. Did Philip K. Dick see this before writing "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"?

Logan's Run is not Space - but it was our big SciFi buzz in the theaters in the 1970s before Star Wars changed the game entirely. Kind of the last of the actual 'idea' films before blockbuster fantasies in that small respect - though it is an Adventure film too.

Handy Haversack:

Ike and I disagree on the quality of the sequel, but Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir) is an excellent novel about lesbian necromancers in SPAAAAAAAACE!

I mean, what is not to absolutely love?

Beneath the Rising (Premee Mohamed) is a great novel of sort of decolonizing a Lovecraftian horror/SF story. Really fun and honest.

The Breath of the Sun by Rachel/Isaac (my copy says Rachel) Fellman is a heartbreaking SF book about mountains.

Ann Leckie's Justice trilogy is the best kind of space opera.

Everyone on the Moon Is Essential Personnel by Julian K. Jarboe is a book of super-sharp working-class-conscious short stories.

The Breach, by M. T. Hill is maybe the best first contact novel I've ever read.

They Will Drown in Their Mothers' Tears is time-travel SF set against the backdrop of Eurocentrist horror. A hard book but excellent.

This Is How You Lose the Time War is a time-travel, antiwar love story that has some of the most lovely writing I have seen in a loooooong time.

You know, if there's a list being compiled.

I'd recommend anything Quatermass-related, he's a rocket scientist character created by Nigel Kneale for several early British tv series (the first is 4/6 lost, the second two from the 50's are on Youtube iirc) and then three Hammer movies were made based on them - The Quatermass Xperiment (The Creeping Unknown in the US), Quatermass 2 (Enemy From Space) and Quatermass and the Pit (Five Million Years to Earth) which is the best - an alien object unearthed in a London subway begin driving the city mad for really wild reasons. Quatermass has had more recent remakes and radio serials etc. They're concept-heavy SF esp for the time, Nigel Kneale also wrote The Stone Tapes British Tv-movie which melds SF and the supernatural in a fascinating way that has been influential on both genres. End of plug! en.wikipedia.org...

Ike, that was the first book that got me to break my "no series!" rule in a long time. The energy of the first (and the perspective of that character) is so powerful and charming that it was a shock to shift in the second, but I did really like it. Looking forward to the conclusion in a way I haven't in quite a while.

Oh, the previously mentioned Cathereynne M. Valente has another excellent book (that I've read; she has a lot of books!) called Radiance: space whale oppression, movie crews, and hallucinatory vaudeville.

Oh, crap, and Claire Vaye Watkins, Gold Fame Citrus! It's "cli-fi," but it's just unbelievably well done.

I duno how available it is but there's a nifty manga series called Saturn Apartments translated from japan by Viz: "The story is set in a distant future, where the Earth has been evacuated and humanity now inhabits a man-made ring-shaped city orbiting 35 kilometers above the planet's surface. The ring is divided into floors, of which there are three; the first being the living space of everyday workers, the second being dedicated to agriculture, and the third being the dwellings of the upper class. The plot follows the life of a young man called Mitsu, whose job as a window cleaner allows him a glimpse into the lives of the ring's inhabitants, as he attempts to learn more about his father's disappearance while working in the same job". It's largely slice of life and explores class and is distinctly Japanese.

Dark Star is a 70s SF black comedy about space crew survivors stuck for 20 yrs in a cramped ship on a mission destroying unstable planets, while they (and the ship, which has sentient bombs) are becoming unstable in the process, film student project expanded to a feature, directorial debut of John Carpenter and co-written/made with Dan O'Bannon (Alien screenplay, Return of the Living Dead, etc). it's cheap and creaky but has funny ideas and predates the "mundane working stiffs in space" stuff in Alien (among other things). An alien is played by a beach ball, so there's that.

Shirley Collins’ Space Girl? (Possibly too close to folk for this mix)
The Space Oddity cover earlier was cool; I could only think of Natalie Merchant or the Langley Schools’ versions

This Max Richter album is so so awesome. It is 8 hrs, supporting a full sleep and dream circle!

Sheila. omg. I bought the eight cd Max Richter Sleep box set last year. It was the soundtrack to pandemic nap taking EVERY day. Yes, I nap a lot. Living your show as usual...Chris in Philly

Sheila, I'll follow up over e-mail, but I'm happy to volunteer some labor to make the compilation list from today. Spare you the effort.

I liked Silent Running because Bruce Dern tries to save their little part of earth... And his best friend is a 'cute' robot!

Space Girl is so unlike any other Shirley Collins tune. I first heard it from a WFMU DJ premium from Trouble.

This would go good in a front-of-ship, female captain in repose as the stars float by kind of scene

Chris + Heidee—It's such a special album. Emotional, dreamy, soothing, must perfectly pair with a nap.

Nick Hill of the FMU family turned me on to Space Girl. And by extension, Shirley. Agreed, it’s an outlier.

Nice, winston! Solid drink, that!

My pleasure, Sheila.

And THANKS! This was both far out and down to Earth -- the best kind of SF: interrogating the reaches of human achievement to say "yes? where have you been? and where can you go?"

Thanks so much.

Be well, Friday Friends!

I second The Girl from Monday. Love Hal Hartley.
Not a fan, though, of most other no-effects psychological sci-fi-fi - Hal’s has heart and depth, but most are basically boring near-mumblecore films.
I need to look up an indie about time travel to recommend now...
