What's all this about the maligned cassette?

Gary, you didn't tweet about tonight's show?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

Hi find cassette PLAYERS inferior. Especially broken ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Gary:

Oh, shoot, I thought I did? Lemme go check
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
coelacanth∅))):

i thought 8-track cartridges were everyone's least favorite analogue format! mine's probably the wax cylinder - though i speak with a high degree of ignorance
Avatar 7:10pm
LambdaCalculus:

Absolutely no joke: I recently saw a Vaporware artist release a single on wax cylinder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Gary:

Wow, that's pretty analog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
coelacanth∅))):

the cool thing about that is you can just *say* the song's on it and possibly no one will ever know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Gary:

That cover makes it look like this tape is just Ibrahim Tatlises, and in fact that's why I bought it. But it's a various artists comp, and my first exposure to Izzet Altinmese
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
chresti:

I'm not sure if I've listened to wax cylinders before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
coelacanth∅))):

i don't think i have; just recordings of wax cylinder recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
coelacanth∅))):

Gary was it a happy surprise, beyond Izzet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Rich in Washington:

I've had an Edison wax cylinder on a bric-a-brac shelf on my office forever. There's a database online with audio files that you can look many of them up and listen to them.

Hi Gary. Late for Bodega P. again. How inappropriate, especially when tapes are playing.

Hello Bodeganistas. Have been listening and admiring the cassette cover photos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

Michael Cumella used to play them on his show sometimes. TDK, the man of the hour! WR!
Avatar 7:25pm
TDK60:

WFMU used to have the Antique Phonograph hour. Sometimes cylinders were played. Also wind-up Victrola 78s. The host had that gear in the station.

HI all - I like tapes :)

There's a page for his show: www.wfmu.org...

Mahşeri = "judgment" according to my Google translate attempt.

I'm dying to find out what the instrument is she's holding on the cover
Avatar 8:12pm
TDK60:

I still have an old Toure Kunda tape, taped off someone's album. Maybe the first Senegalese group I heard.
  8:12pm
headcleaner:

I'm dying to see this unidentifiable cassette cover you have in store for us, Gary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Gary:

Ah, the one from which I know not where it came? Next up after Massnawa!
Avatar 8:17pm
tim abdellah:

I don't know what that instrument is! Very curious too.
  8:17pm
headcleaner:

Am gonna have to take a stroll down the rue de Chartres, next time I'm in that city (have been in around the storied Barbés-Rochechouart neighborhood a fair bit, just not that particular street)
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm

I think my earliest cassette was from a radio show in '78 or 79.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Gary:

My first cassette was Magical Mystery Tour
Avatar 8:21pm
tim abdellah:

This Massnawa is awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Gary:

That cassette is unbelievable, yeah
  8:23pm
headcleaner:

yup it's a tough one... does her henna tattoo provide a clue?
Avatar 8:24pm
TDK60:

Wow Gary, "Mystery Tour!" Yes, I think cassettes came out in the late '60s but didn't really take off (in the US) till the late '70s, like chresti noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Gary:

My first guess would be Yemen for this one, but it's a complete guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
coelacanth∅))):

around 1968 i got my first cassette recorder for xmas, got cheap blank tapes for it. it was always a creative medium for me. my brother already had on for a year or so - so at least that early.
i never got prerecorded cassettes until cds came along and i refused to partake, and records became unavailable.
Avatar 8:29pm
tim abdellah:

That mystery track sounded Gulf to me. Maybe Kuwait?
Avatar 8:34pm
Ike:

Hi all! I thought there was supposed to be a big apocalyptic storm, but nothing happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Gary:

Let's hope it doesn't str .. IKE!
Avatar 8:35pm
tim abdellah:

Or maybe Emirati or Saudi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
coelacanth∅))):

the henna tatoo looks a bit like a henna tatoo on a member of mulla, from iraq
but i don't think that's iraqi (sp?) alphabet.
kuwait seems like a good guess to me. me, who knows very little about these things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
coelacanth∅))):

i have what looks like a smaller version of that instrument on the Fatouma album. the resonator is roundish, maybe 9" across and covered with fur. tuning accomplished by the stickiness of sinew
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Gary:

Whoa, do you know what it's called, CeolaC?
Avatar 8:47pm
TDK60:

I've been looking for that harp instrument online.. Maybe an East African ebongo? found a vid of a guy playin' something similar...
www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:48pm
TDK60:

..excuse me, endongo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
coelacanth∅))):

was afraid you'd ask me that! it was a gift many years ago from someone with money. she didn't know and i never found out what it's called or what country it's from. she said africa at the time. that's all i got.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Gary:

That endongo does look close, TDK
Avatar 8:55pm
tim abdellah:

Gary - you may be right. I googled "Rowaishan", which is written on the j-card near the phone number. It's the name of a Yemeni tribe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
coelacanth∅))):

this song is just Amazing!

Hi Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm

the instrument i have is very much like this only considerably longer
external-content.duckduckgo.com...
this person calls it a "vintage african ... bowl lyre"
- so, not much help.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

i guess it is chresti, just a smallish one. the strings are almost twice as long as the one i posted, but the body is a good bit smaller than the one in the video TDK posted

interview went as well as I could expect. In the first 5 mins, I lost power twice, and finally, my camera on my laptop stopped working. I didn't want to reboot. So, I gave a great audio presentation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm

NGH!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm

The endongo is probly a primal instrument - instinctual
...that is - we all have an endogenous endongo...
ngh - good luck !
Avatar 9:40pm

I think harps go way back, Revrab. Before boogie woogie.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm

Consider how recent a development doing an interview that way even is...

@ike - it was more muddled than apocalyptic, but the storm definitely landed uptown
