"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

I love it when 'out' players surprise you with some 'in.' I saw Peter Brotzmann and Joe McPhee a few years ago and both of them would drop into little bits of 'normal.' Kind of jarring and fun at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always have this idea that Outside Music is really Roots Music - & people who play it tended to come out of Blues & Gospel traditions. It's the most natural expression & really more Traditional than the Formal stuff ! But then there are super-educated people like Braxton that probly prove this wrong - I dunno.
Of course many Artists in many fields have held that first you learn the Rules & then you can transcend or @ least play with them.

...but if you play - you know that if you don't have those Structures - you better a.) Damn well Listen to each other - & b.) Come up with something quick! So it's just other Skills.

Outside, one needs to know when to change, and when to stop, otherwise boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@@RRNov63: That's true. Even Ornette's thing, where players are improvising by reacting to specific elements of other players, it's not truly formless.

I saw Prime Time around the time of the release of Tone Dialing and good gawd, it was just crazy. There were bits where it sounded like everybody had gone off into no-man's land and then they'd all just STOP....and then continue in the same direction. Exhilarating.

RevRab: By the 1960s, the practice of jazz improvisation was pretty well codified and there's a clear idea of what are the "wrong" and "right" notes to play with a given chord. Within the blues, there are different rules, but it's also pretty well codified.

@HH yeah and my building is kind of an odd duck. Used to be rental only and some kind of Mitchell Lama thing; so we have some really old renters who grandfathered in, lifers, and owners. Luckily the building has SEVERE anti-subletting rules and ownership rules; you can't own more than 2 units in the building AND you MUST occupy at least one if you own two, cap on duration of sublets, etc. As a result, it's a really diverse building across ages, races, occupations, ethnicities, etc. It ALSO means (alas) that we have all kinds of weirdness that old buildings in NYC have RE electricity, gas, etc etc etc...
  👻 10:57am

Star Bar is definitely still around. Most of the long-standing music venues and record stores have somehow managed to survive the past year. I enjoy living here and think the city has managed to avoid becoming bland but I've only been here 7 years so I can't give a legit "lifer" perspective.

HH that'd be the Masquerade, which has since moved into a decrepit mall downtown called Underground Atlanta
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Handy Haversack:

Masquerade! Yes!

Whoa, it moved to Underground? That's nutty.

Really saw a ton of great shows there. It was such a boon that Atlanta had all-ages venues.

What part of town are you in, Mike H?

Mike, Beats is an audio place in the back of the parking lot next to wax & facts, not much of a selection and more 12" old school DJ vibe. But it was on the way to the car.

@HH I'm in Kirkwood, was previously in Cabbagetown. My wife grew up in Druid Hills

Hey JA - what recording was the Patrice Rushen from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am

@terminalhappiness It's called Prelusion ('74). Her first album.

Ah, I know Druid Hills well, Cabbagetown relatively well, and Kirkwood actually pretty well -- had friends who lived there when I was growing up. I went to school on Ponce, so L5P was an easy walk away.
  👻 11:13am
Mike H:

Thanks for the lowdown on Beats, JA - have walked past that place many times and never thought to pop in. That's cool that you went to school on Ponce, HH. A lot of the spots you'd walk by between there and L5P are still going - Plaza Theatre, the Majestic, Righteous Room, and (my personal favorite haunt) Videodrome
