Favoriting June 21, 2021: FDL 341 Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart

From wikipedia: "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" is a 1934 popular song with words and music by James F. Hanley. It was introduced by Hal Le Roy and Eunice Healey in the Broadway revue 'Thumbs Up!'

The most notable recordings were made by Judy Garland, who recorded it numerous times, including in the 1938 film 'Listen, Darling' and for Decca Records in 1939. It later became a standard number in her concerts and TV shows when she performed it as an up-tempo arrangement by Nelson Riddle from her 1958 Capitol album.

In 1972, a recording by The Trammps reached No. 17 on the Billboard, Best Selling Soul Singles chart and No. 64 on the Hot 100.

Judy Garland  Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart   Favoriting 1935  Judy performs one of her signature tunes for the first time in public. Broadcast on ''The Shell Chateau Hour'' with Wallace Beery on 16 November, 1935.
On the night of the show's broadcast, Judy discovered that her father (Frank Gumm) was seriously ill in hospital with spinal meningitis, but had no choice but to go on and perform - her performance has an added intensity. Her father died the next morning and Judy never saw him alive again. However, a radio was placed next to his bed so he could hear the broadcast, and hear 'Baby' sing one last time.

Jeroen van Merwijk’s “breekbare mensen” translated by Jan van Houwelingen

Breakable persons, breakable persons
Looking for their stroke of luck
Breakable persons, I know them, their exertions
Sensitive and easily struck
Breakable persons, pamper, don’t hurt ‘em
Don’t pressure, don’t make them stuck

They may try to live just like every other
But that’s much easier said than it’s done
If the poor want a penny, they just have to mutter
They’re the ones that still truly bother
And even their enemies they help out of the gutter
They can never say no, no not to anyone

Breakable persons may fall into shards
Breakable persons, they tear and they tore
Then they carve in a tree their sweetest regards
For Greenpeace they recruit members, protectors and guards
Because the poor little seals, they just can’t disregard
Or they collect money for victims of war

Praise the lord for the breakable persons
They give our live purpose, they give it an aim
And they get when they die, eventually, certain
Obituaries with lovely words in a frame

short pause, had to look up the story about Judy Garland's father dying being associated with Zing. You have the date there but thought I would point out that she was 13 years old, her father only 49. And well, she only made it to 47. Zing.

There where a lot of them that sounded alike, especially the more recent retro-jazz versions, which become really boring once you've heard the version they are imitating
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm

But leaving those out, 3 hrs is still too short. I'll come back to some of the "over 64" recordings I don't have time for today.

relistening to bits i missed. Regarding the announcer saying 12 years old and Wikipedia saying 13 years old, I'm not checking the dates, so don't which right. Most significant is the circumstances. I didn't hear the announcer when initially listening, so I assumed early broadcast but did not realize Garland was so young. Listening today, I'm amazed. would have guessed she was late teens or early 20s.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 10:24am
WR:

Hearing The Move version and it doesn't have the zing for me that it did 50 years ago. The Enoch Light version is fun in that it slowly introduced the main theme. If it sticks with me I'll try to find out who did the arrangement and orchestration. Laters.
