Tony Coulter:

Hello, all! Today's playlist image is a detail of Yves Tanguy's 1945 painting "The Rapidity of Sleep."
  12:00pm
headcleaner:

From right to left, it reads like the 20-year U.S. campaign in Afghanistan, no?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Hiya Tony and all!

headcleaner: Hah! The sleep of reason begets occupiers.
Avatar 12:01pm

Or a conga line.... (Heya, headcleaner & James!)

At least this show is Taliban free...I hope!

Heya heya Tony, Headcleaner, James, Henry! and all!

Two giant books on recent US–Afghanistan history were just published; one came up on my reserve list just last week. Educational and depressing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Yvang:

@James : Title and author? I am interested (and I wanna be depressed)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
fred:

Probably the last time in a while I can listen to this show. M1 computer finally arrived at work, months of "fun" ahead
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm

Carter Malkasian, The American War in Afghanistan. This and the other, The Afghanistan Papers: A Secret History of the War, by Washington post journalist Craig Whitlock, are reviewed here. Times reviewer recommended one start w/ the Malkasian:

Hey, Fred! I'll try to make it a good show, then....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm

@James : Thanks! I'll check them out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm

@ljfw: My usually reliable bookshop has come short lately: orders 2 months behind, no news
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

There's a place near me here in Portland that has a sign in their window marking the number of days the war had lasted. As you can imagine, the number got pretty large. I'll have to walk by and see what they've done now.
  12:14pm
headcleaner:

They must be swamped with orders for those books about Afghanistan (now that everyone is so shocked at what happened, and desperate to figure out what went wrong), Fred
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
listener james from westwood:

Good heavens, Tony, what a tally that's gotta be.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
listener james from westwood:

@fred: I've heard folks who are adjacent to supply-chain details say things are jammed up or scarce, and that right now might be the best time to order gifts (books incl) for the holidays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
fred:

@headcleaner: None of these are about Afghanistan (one is about UbuWeb though). There's a new Colson Whitehead coming up, so I hope they sort it out, I would hate to have to find a new bookshop

I've been listening but commenting on the wrong playlist. Boy is my face red.

Hey, Rich! Your face *is* red -- but e(a)rnest.

Hi Rich! I did the same once but I was so ashamed I never told anyone. Until now.

Aw shucks, Fred, I was being facetious! (As if most Americans ever cared that much about what we were up to in our 7,267 days in Afghanistan, or why we were there in the first place)

This piece is terrific, never heard of this person (band?)
Avatar 12:44pm

Band. They were a really good (but pretty obscure) '80s Brit band. Kevin Harrison was a member.

Hazards of multitasking (in my case, laundry) dept.: I first read Ice Yacht as Ike Yard
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:49pm

This NPG is new to me; very much digging it!

@fred: For all I know, commenter Ike might just have a yard!
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Rescued that NPG disc from a 50-cent bin. Long live 50-cent bins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
fred:

@lffw: I had a blog years ago, and an offhand comment about Ike Yard got me a reply from one of them. I've heard they're still around, I sure hope so

Twice as good as dollar bins
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
listener james from westwood:

Hell, even the FMU Record Fair doesn't have a 50-cent bin! But they do have lights to keep lit.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Everyday Music out here has 50-cent bins. Makes dollar bins seem exorbitant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
fred:

I did have a double take about that NPG in the 50-cent bin (laundry, still). Thought the New Power Generation had really fallen out of style

This is quite wondrous
Avatar 2:03pm
Tony Coulter:

It is!

But I always wonder: Why isn't "wondrous" spelled with an 'e'?
Avatar 2:04pm
HollyRT:

you mean "wonderous" or "wondrouse"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
fred:

@Nick S.: A much in demand occupation, so I trust you'll do fine
Avatar 2:04pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Holly: Ha!
Avatar 2:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Wondrouse would be wonderous.
  2:07pm
Marie:

Yeah, like "murderous" is not "murdrous".... maybe cuz experiencing wondrousness is kinda lickety split and it ended up getting shortened naturally to reflect that?
Avatar 2:10pm
HollyRT:

This guy has a collaboration with a vocalist, Ann Steel, that is absolutely spectacular
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm

Being French, I gave up on logic in spelling early on, but carry on, don't mind me
Avatar 2:11pm

Have you heard it, Tony? "The Ann Steel Album"?
