LONELINESS IN JERSEY CITY (Wallace Stevens)

The deer and the dachshund are one.

Well, the gods grow out of the weather.

The people grow out of the weather;

The gods grow out of the people.

Encore, encore, encore les dieux …

The distance between the dark steeple

And cobble ten thousand and three

Is more than a seven-foot inchworm

Could measure by moonlight in June.

Kiss, cats; for the deer and the dachshund

Are one. My window is twenty-nine three

And plenty of window for me.

The steeples are empty and so are the people,

There’s nothing whatever to see,

Except Polacks that pass in their motors

And play concertinas all night.

They think that all is all right,

Since the deer and the dachshund are one.

Jersey Jim! I know that Ouch! Once, when going swimming at a mountain creek, on the way there, I was dragging a heavy foam raft behind me on a dirt path. It went over a yellow jacket door. Soon I had about 20 clustered on each ankle, stinging me. I was almost to the stream. Trouble was, the last part of the path was a very steep dip to the water, maybe 30 feet. I about jumped or flew down that and into the water where I submerged and the bees left. It was like an electric jolt. Don't know what woulda happened if no water was near. I will never drag a raft behind me again!
