"Shoo Rah" barely qualifies here. Kenner is singing in regular old English; it's just the female backing singers offering up the "Shoo Rah"s....

Philip_IoM:

May be if you (WFMU) dropped the politics then a wider section of the community would be able to pledge.
On a more positive note, I always let the theme tune play through - a great theme choice. Generally a good show, though I was upset when you cut short the song about the guy taking down his gun and "greasing it" to remedy some sort of injustice. Surely this is the blues?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Mr. Fine Wine:

Philip_IoM: When did I cut short a song? I'm not sure what you're referring to. I did play a song on this week's show where a guy threatened a woman with over-the-top violence, and afterward I referred to the "ugly sentiments" expressed in that song. I didn't cut it short; I played it all the way through. Is that what you mean? Similarly, I played a set of four songs on last week's show that had violent themes of shooting, beating, and killing and referred to all four as being "un-P.C." or something, but I didn't cut any of them short.
  11:25am
Philip_IoM:

Gosh - I didn't expect a response. Am impressed.
The cutting short of a song was, may be, 6-months-to-a-year ago (when you had a guest on the show) and you faded a record out for its 'unsuitable' content. I was quite shocked as you seem to love the music you play - but not if it breaches currently acceptable norms. History is what it is, not what you wish it to be. Speaking liberally, I accept your disapproval of the record, but not that you apply modern-day values to it. It is what it is (was) and you play lots of records (great records) that would not exist if current political values appertained. History is what happened, not how it fits the current narrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Mr. Fine Wine:

Ah, I was about to say that last week I DID fade a record out early that had lyrics about the narrator beating the crap out of his woman—Guitar Reed's Don't You Say a Mumblin' Word—but only because at 3:17 it was feeling too long and I had a lot more records I wanted to squeeze in. I specifically played that set last week BECAUSE of the lyrics about beating and killing people. Would be curious to hear what record you're referring to from 6 months to a year ago. Of course modern-day values can't be applied retroactively to cultural artifacts, but the cultural artifacts can still offend or embarrass me enough personally that I don't want to hear them on my show.
  12:34pm
Philip_IoM:

"but the cultural artifacts can still offend or embarrass me enough personally that I don't want to hear them on my show" - so that's the crux of the matter.
We know where we stand. You are correct to uphold your personal values. However, I'm originally from the UK (and share many European values too) that applauded the reality of urban blues/soul etc etc that spawned the 1960s British blues invasion into the USA, when the USA had sort of lost its roots. I think it's a 50/50 thing - there's stuff you don't like but, at the same time, there's reality. Something you wish for, but at the same time, a reality one has to accept.
The 'inconvenient' Elvis Presley did a lot (everything) to awaken folks to an alternative reality. I can live with that. Please don't change your show one bit, other than to refrain from adverse comment. The content of your programme is spot on, the biased political requests for financial support is divisive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Thanks for the kind words. I am befuddled by "biased political requests for financial support." We are an independent listener-supported station. We try to raise funds twice a year, once in a major way in March during our two-week "marathon," and then again in a less-pushy way for the entire month of October. How on earth is there anything "biased" or "political" or "divisive" about that? You lost me there, pal.
