For those of you who came over from Bodega Pop, I meant to mention this there: There's another Burmese food fest in Queens this weekend! Gary & co. mentioned this fest. It used to be just once a year, but now they do it a few times a year: www.eatingintranslation.com...

Quick hi, check in later, no time to horse around now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Woah, this looks cool, Ike. Thanks for the heads up!

You horse around when you're ready, Doc.

The last one, which was a few months ago, was a bit crowded, so if I go to this one, I'm going to double-mask. But I think that was the first one since the pandemic began, so maybe it was just busy because everyone was raring to go after so long.

Big fan of Blues Horse!, ahem, harp!

And the doors to the church space are all generally open, so at least you get some air circulating in there.

Wow, Hohner Marine Bands have gone up in price a lot since the last time I bought one. Whoa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

String, I also remember them being a few bucks, not sure what they go for note...
Bye
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

@Doc, Von Freeman featured on that George Freeman cut as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

@String: How much we talking here? I loved playing the harmonica when I was a kid. Would be fun to pick it back up.

Good evening DJ SS and all!

Looks like we're averaging 60-65 bucks (Canadian). I started a long time ago; I remember the first one was 4.95
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Good ear, zzz. According to Wikipedia, this was Grant Green's first record date.

WR:

Music lovers would work at the record store and then convince Koester to record new artists. The jump into AACM was mostly due to Chuck Nessa who eventually started his own label featuring AACM artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Sam Segal:

That makes sense, WR. I'm glad Koester was open minded enough to listen to him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Sam Segal:

The Nessa catalog looks excellent.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
WR:

Bruce Iglauer also worked for Koester and started Alligator Records when Koester declined to record Hound Dog Taylor. Each case, they got to learn by seeing what Koester was doing and then go out on their own. I think there are other examples all the way up to Americana in the late 90s / 00s.

Marie:

Hey All! Sam, I'm really enjoying the show. Being from Chicago the music has a familiar sound that is really nice. Growing up, in terms of the blues, all I heard was the Chicago blues so I got sick of it and loved other styles when I found them. But now I like Chicago style blues again. Great show--thanks! And I remember that Jazz Record Mart when it was in River North--amazing shop!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
WR:

The Nessa records were all high quality audio, high quality vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Sam Segal:

Marie! Glad to have a real life Chicagoan along for the ride tonight. I am from Minneapolis, so I made a lot of trips to Chicago growing up. The River North location for JRM is the one I always went to before they downsized and became "Bob's Jazz and Blues Mart."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
WR:

Koester having the combo of record store and record company was an incubator of sorts, I guess is my point, an important impact, in addition to the great range of recordings released on Delmark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
zzz:

interesting WR, good to know this history
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Sam Segal:

It's a great point, WR. And it seems like he was equally dedicated to the store as he was to the label. Last time I was in his store was in late 2019. And he was there, in his mid-80s, filing records, ringing people up, putting on records.

Thanks for bringing some stability, Coel!
@WR: Berman and Stein are two of my favorites from the contemporary Chicago scene. Fun fact about Jason Stein...he is comedian Amy Schumer's half brother.

@zzz, 10:44-I got to the Masada show the Sunday before last, the 1st of the 2 Vanguard dates. And they were terrific; Zorn both conducted and played, still sharp/edgy as ever (though he did sit during some of the players solos, but, man, he's allowed). A bit different than the original Masada, which, even though the music was Zorn's, functioned mostly like a band of equals. With The New Masada, there was no doubt who was in charge...
The music, as I said, was fabulous.

I hope we hear some Rich Corpolongo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

Welcome, rw! Well, it's not too late for me to get some extra credit before the end of the semester to bump my grade up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

Zzz, did they have a pianist sit in this past Sunday with Masada? They did bring a young pianist on for 1 tune, but I didn't catch who it was.

nice docjazz. it was also very clear how much zorn loves playing with julian lage. picked up a copy of their new cd on tzadik but have yet to listen.. he mentioned he wanted to “record it old school, like blue note style” and mentioned they did the whole thing in 90 minutes all first takes. “hot!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

no guests/pianist but that sounds cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

Wow, and would you look at that, it appears that a certain hero has come through and brought me up to a very solid A! My WFMU GPA will benefit. Thank you!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
doctorjazz:

Ooo, have to look for that. I have Lage alone, Lage with Nels Cline, quite a player!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

@L: I must admit, I haven't heard of Rich Corpolongo. That is a Chicago jazz name beyond my depth of knowledge. Any specific records of his I should check out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

Seen him a few times with Nels Cline as well, talk about string theory...
