doctorjazz:

I'm the same way, silence in the conversation makes me anxious (and I take the blame for "failing" in the conversation). That strategy of just living with it is something they work in in meditation-my wife has Headspace, which we use every night. He talks about feelings like anxiety, depression, and the strategy is to identify them, get to know them as thoughts that come through your head like many other thoughts, and aren't necessary tethered to any outside reality. If you practice, you can learn to identify them, then not try to deny them, but just be OK acknowledging that the feeling is there, and letting it go. It's the compensation for the feeling, acting on it, or denying it, that gets you in trouble.
This actually works fairly well for physical pain. I've been having difficulty with spinal stenosis for the last year, with pretty bad right sided back pain. The Headspace strategy for dealing with it is to look directly at it, not try to change it, just characterize it and be OK with acknowledging it's presence. I think it's really helped me with the pain (I've also been doing physical therapy, so it's hard to say what helped when you do more than one thing at once, but I do think both helped). The strategy/issue is similar with emotional pain, anxiety, etc. When you have a chronic pain, you do things naturally to avoid the pain. This means tensing up those back muscles if you feel it coming on, even when you don't, but make a movement that can sometimes trigger it (like bending with back pain). What happens when you tense is you put extra pressure on the nerves that hurt (the ones you shouldn't hurt at all, hahaha). If you learn to just look at them without trying to do anything about them, just accepting them, characterizing them, they change, usually for the better.
End of prolonged pronouncement for today.

zzz:

people seem to get a lot of good out of Headspace and mindfulness practice in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
doctorjazz:

Been doing it nightly for about a year (and some yoga, stretching, etc), it's a good system (and mindfulness in general is a good thing). Generally, when I drop out of a 10 O Clock show for a while, that's what I'm doing (and will need to do in a few minutes for a bit)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Sam Segal:

Super helpful and well said, Doc. The analogy between mental and physical pain is really clarifying. I've been working on developing a meditation practice over the past 10 months or so, and the naming/recognition of feelings as they pass through my mind is something I've been trying to focus on. I have a minor issue with back pain, and sometimes it flairs up when I am trying to sit up straight during meditation. When that happens, I try to just "sit with" the pain, not trying to push it away. What you said reminded me of that.
Avatar 10:37pm
Constantly Choking:

@Doc I've gone through phases of meditation but my wife has really gotten into it and she describes a lot of the same useful distance from anxiety/pain etc as you do. Thinking I should really make it a bigger part of my life (plus Lynch and Robert Crumb swear by it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Sam Segal:

I have not tried Headspace, but I've heard great things as well. I like to do guided meditations from an app made by the Plum Village Monastery, which was founded by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. They have some great, simple 20-minute meditation recordings on there that I really like.

Sam Segal:

I've heard good things about hers as well, zzz. Haven't checked them out yet, but I've been meaning to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
doctorjazz:

It's even more than just sitting with it in the Headspace section on pain. They actually instruct you to focus on it-where exactly it is (and you likely don't realize it, but it usually moves a bit), the shape, exactly where it is, try to visualize if it's hot/cold, a color for it, then focus your breathing in the area. Doing that removes some of the counterproductive strategies one usually uses for it. I've found this helpful (and spinal stenosis pain can be quite severe and limiting-I used to regularly bike 20+ hilly miles in the local Watchung Reservation; now I can't walk half a block without stopping due to pain). I do find it helpful (of course, it's not always easy to apply these strategies when you're in the outside world, working or such). I only tried one other meditation app aside from Headspace, which my wife didn't like, and Headspace seems to do the trick. But I'm curious, might try the Plum Village version, just to see what differences there are.
I find it easier to use the techniques for the physical pain than for the emotional issues they do also try to teach strategies for (these are much more nebulous; in fact, the first 10 episodes or so, they just have you trying to recognize thought and feelings that break in, and just label them thought or feeling, and pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. It takes a bit to catch yourself doing things and using strategies you've been using all your life. You can't focus on them, get familiar with them, and let them go, until you are actually conscious of what you're doing in your head. (oops, excessive pontification alert, did it again)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Sam Segal:

@Doc: The Plum Village app is much less structured than Headspace, I think. Could be a good supplement, if you're ever interested in exploring another approach to mindfulness that's informed by an explicitly Zen Buddhist perspective. The technique of deeply focusing on the pain is really interesting to me. Will have to investigate further.
