These three men have appeared on many hundreds (thousands?) of recordings. Go-to session men, able to play in any style and context. And each were elite orchestral/symphonic players

	9:28am Doug Schulkind: On this Ken McIntyre record, Selwart Clarke is credited simply as "concermaster." There is an uncredited 13-piece string section included. He is most likely playing viola. Typically the 1st violinist is concertmaster. Clarke was an abundantly talented man.

	10:23am Doug Schulkind: Of course, Ornette would soon be doing occasional things with a violin that many fans of his saxophone playing were not quite fans of. I think criticism of Ornette's violin playing is rank silliness. The man was making sounds with deep emotion and knowledge no matter the instrument. You can't love Ornette the saxist but not Ornette the violinist. My decision is final.

	10:26am Listener Gregory: The Jennifer Koh album Violin Fantasies contains an Ornette composition called "Trinity," which I have not heard elsewhere. There is Ornette on this classical album... right after Schoenberg! It's a good piece.

	10:30am Listener Gregory: Doug, the Ornette string compositions are a real contribution of his. But when he picked up the violin in the middle of a concert, it was often just unclear (to me) what we were supposed to get from it. I never felt that way with his alto playing.
	10:31am Doug Schulkind: @Listener Gregory With respect, I might suggest that the onus is (was) on you to find your way to understanding.
	10:32am Listener Gregory: Yes, but I'm still lost in the woods.
	10:34am Doug Schulkind: With masters like Ornette Coleman, and Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker, all who have been ridiculed for the appreciation of and collaboration with strings, I start from the position that what they are putting out there is a work of significance and importance. It is up to me to find my way to both acceptance and pleasuretaking.

	10:48am WR: Yeah, speaking of Charlie Parker, by playing violin, the music Ornette was creating would not be heard in context of how does this sound post Charlie Parker. Regarding one's response to listening to Ornette's violin playing, 🎻 perhaps helpful to not think of Ornette but to listen as if it is someone else that was inspired by Ornette. And understanding, perhaps not the appropriate word.

These three men have appeared on many hundreds (thousands?) of recordings. Go-to session men, able to play in any style and context. And each were elite orchestral/symphonic players

	9:28am Doug Schulkind: On this Ken McIntyre record, Selwart Clarke is credited simply as "concermaster." There is an uncredited 13-piece string section included. He is most likely playing viola. Typically the 1st violinist is concertmaster. Clarke was an abundantly talented man.

I think criticism of Ornette's violin playing is rank silliness. The man was making sounds with deep emotion and knowledge no matter the instrument. You can't love Ornette the saxist but not Ornette the violinist. My decision is final.

	10:30am Listener Gregory: Doug, the Ornette string compositions are a real contribution of his. But when he picked up the violin in the middle of a concert, it was often just unclear (to me) what we were supposed to get from it. I never felt that way with his alto playing.

	10:34am Doug Schulkind: With masters like Ornette Coleman, and Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker, all who have been ridiculed for the appreciation of and collaboration with strings, I start from the position that what they are putting out there is a work of significance and importance. It is up to me to find my way to both acceptance and pleasuretaking.

Regarding one's response to listening to Ornette's violin playing, 🎻 perhaps helpful to not think of Ornette but to listen as if it is someone else that was inspired by Ornette. And understanding, perhaps not the appropriate word.
