Good morning from Finland! Big news this week, other than Covid cases climbing, was that Finland is going to purchase a load of F35 fighters from the US. Got mixed feelings about this. Fundamentally I hate spending money on things designed to kill people and this would add up to about 2000 EUR per resident. On the other hand I did notice that this decision (in a country that has a very long border with Russia and was invaded over that border) came after Russia started setting up troops at the Ukrainian border.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
Brian D:

Don, I hadn't heard that. Yeah, weapons of war... But I know your countrymen have reason to fear Russia.
Avatar 4:41am
Don in Tampere:

Yeah. And one thing that I really don't get is how many left-wingers in Europe support Putin consistently. IMHO, Russia is the biggest fascist country in the world right now (though the Trump wing of the Republicans might like to set up fascism in the US, they've not succeeded as far as I can tell). I don't know if it's due to nostalgic feelings toward the former USSR, or a visceral hatred of the US, but it makes no sense to me.

Don in Tampere:

To be clear, I would certainly place myself left of center too, but that's an additional reason not to trust Putin, who has ignored national soverignty, fought free speech, and persecuted sexual minorities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Brian D:

I'm with you on Putin, Don. And far left of center myself. Putin has nothing to do with Marx or Trotsky, even if those guys are your bag.

Don in Tampere:

I'm probably more into the democratic socialism camp, though Marx was and remains a brilliant and important thinker who couldn't foresee how things would develop, but certainly didn't expect communism to emerge first from an agrarian, feudalistic society. But despite that, I find it kind of cool and interesting that what is allegedly the only Lenin museum in western Europe is right here in Tampere, where he spent some time, and even met Stalin for the first time. And one of the first things he did after taking power was make Finland independent, on Dec 6, 1918
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
Brian D:

Did not know about the Lenin museum in Tampere. I read a thing a while back that Lenin, when he lived in London, used to spend all his time in the British Museum, writing and doing research. Say what you will, not enough political leaders do that now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57am

By that I mean, being that thoughtful. Most, at least here in the US, barely read.

Don in Tampere:

Indeed. Obama was one of the last intellectual politicians in the US and was also one of the first in a while. (Not that it's an automatic solution: Woodrow Wilson was an intellectual but also an awful racist.) It's maybe not quite as bad over here but the trend is in that direction. But a positive sign was Germany appointing a professor of episemiological economics as minister of health in the new government. I hope he can get the escalating Covid situation there under control. I just had to cancel my planned Christmas trip to my adopted hometown of Frankfurt because of the pandemic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am
Brian D:

Thank you @Cooh John. Glad to have you. And sorry to hear that, Don. About Frankfurt, I mean. And spot on about Obama and Wilson, though the former was/is certainly intelligent but flawed as well (though not as flawed as Wilson).

Hi all! @Don, there are a small number of those oddball Put*n-loving leftists here too. We call them tankies. I just figure they can’t let go of the good old days when the USSR was… ugh.. so great?!? Puzzling indeed since Vlad isn’t exactly hiding that he’s a virulently homophobic billionaire oligarch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46am
Brian D:

Riding on horse, bare-chested, is a dead giveaway, you'd think.

Ike:

A liberal NJ guy I know is dating a Russian lady in southern Brooklyn and he says she really likes Vlad’s whole tough-guy shtick, that it really appeals to old-fashioned Russian women, that he comes across as suave. Yikes. I can’t see this relationship lasting. Especially since he can never find a parking spot in Bensonhurst, LOL.

My bookshelf is also running out of space, like mu record and CD shelves. But lately I've been buying lots of books as epubs for my e-book reader (NOT a Kindle, I refuse to support Amazon). Since I live in a Finnish-speaking country and usually read books in English or German, it is a lot easier to get the books I want to read.. Ike, didn't know the work tankies, but sounds good. In Germany they're called Putinversteher.
Avatar 5:56am
Ike:

Some leftists may also spend so much time reading about the horrors committed worldwide by the CIA that it may have broken their brains. Which is sort of understandable, it’s a long and nauseating list. I wonder if it’s natural to want to take a side or believe some big power somewhere is inherently good. So most tankies also deny that Uighurs are being put in concentration camps or that HK democracy protestors are “real”. They’re all CIA plants, apparently! I mean, wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
Brian D:

Yikes, Ike. I'm glad I don't know any of those people.
