It will! Our first VO will be in about 30 minutes! In the meantime, consider making a donation now, by clicking the banner on any WFMU page, and making a little donation!

George Flitt! I wonder if this is a jab at "Jeff Regan, Investigator." The gimmick for that show is that Jeff works for "Anthony J. Lyon... The Lyon's Eye!" There's a lot of jokes on that show about Lions.

Flitt: Heart of a lion?
  6:06pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I really like Ladd's voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Otis:

$50... just $25 more and he could've had the Sheena premium CD, The Album.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

Alan Ladd does have the originally, laid back, deep mail voice. It sometimes sounds like he's phoning it in... but he's just playing, "cool as a cucumber..."
Avatar 6:07pm
Constance De Witt:

I think they might have used that car sound in many programs!

Think, Halliday, it may be an important clue! Love that almost-there intuition in terms of suspense. Ooh, a breath of air in the garden. Truthtelling, or a setup? haha

I actually have heard really good things about the new Cyrano movie from my cousins.

This seems like a distraction while someone might bother the nephew inside
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Austin Rich:

As was the style at the time, the diegetic and non-diegetic music in this show often overlaps, where the show's "theme music" and transition music is reproduced by a band, or on the radio, or in a club, or some other setting of the show. A lot of film noirs would do this, where the music would switch from "in the movie" to " commenting on the movie."
Avatar 6:14pm
Mr Fab:

as phony as a China egg? Ha, what's that mean?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm

That's why I was LOL at that passage in "Watchmen", wherein Veidt tells the heroes of his plot, and then...I wouldn't want to spoil if for you if you haven't read it.

Avatar 7:00pm
Mr Fab:

That was like watching a movie on fast-forward. Hey, bet we could get a lot of stories in if we always did it like this.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:01pm
Austin Rich:

If I could have tracked down the script, I might have done the whole story with voices. (Maybe I still will someday?) But for now... the summary was all I could find, quickly.
Avatar 7:02pm
Mr Fab:

Joke/parody commercial are the ONLY ads you'll ever hear on this show. WFMU accepts NO sponsors but you, good listeners.
  7:02pm
Listener Robert:

I still think you should write a script that fits that summary, preferably "creatively", then produce it for next year.
Avatar 7:04pm
Constance De Witt:

What about Roma Wines?!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Austin Rich:

That's a good idea, Listener Robert. If I have time, I might try to write something to fit that story. But I'm a busy gent, as is.

I should have gotten some Roma Wines commercials ready!

ACME Brand Sponsorship is, for some reason, the primary sponsorship for Dimestore Radio Theater.

"There's always a market for dancing girls."

Avatar 7:06pm

were there any romance shows in the days of old time radio? Constance could host those. Sponsored by Roma wine (a subsidiary of ACME), of course.
Avatar 7:07pm
Mr Fab:

Cool, we're getting lots more Korla on the organ this episode.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Austin Rich:

There were tons of soaps and romance shows. I haven't listened to many, but I'm sure they are pretty good.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm

I love the episodes when Korla just gets to jam.
Avatar 7:09pm

actually, I do recall "The Torch Is Burning" did play some romance OTR soaps sometimes.

I forgot to mention, but the person who wrote the summary of The Scarlet Queen is Stewart Wright, who wrote that summary in 2016 for The Metropolitan Washington Old Time Radio Club.

The references to the crumbled civilizations that were found on Mars seem like a nod to "The Martian Chronicles" to my mind.
Avatar 7:34pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, I was definitely thinking Bradbury. But who did write this story?
  7:34pm
Listener Robert:

It's a common motif. You sure this wasn't BEFORE Bradbury's?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

Written by Murray Leinster. Let me do some more research...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Austin Rich:

Martian Chronicles was a bunch of stories written over a long period of time, and collected in 1950, around the time that Dimension X first started.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

Looks like "Lost Race" was published in April, 1949. While it's possible that Leinster hadn't read any of Bradbury's fiction previously... but that seems unlikely.
  7:42pm
Listener Robert:

There might be an entry at TVTropes for "lost civilization".
  7:45pm
Listener Robert:

Jules Verne did it, Edward Bulwer-Lytton did it. Come to think of it, who DIDN'T do a "lost civilization" story?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

Lost Civilization on Mars?
  7:46pm
Listener Robert:

Anyplace. The setting is a trivial detail.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

In particular, this story has a lot in common with "Mars Is Heaven." (Finding hallucinations of families on another planet, among the ruins of a crumbled civilization.) Both stories share the "imagining family members" at times when something dangerous happens.

wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Is_Heaven!
  7:48pm
Listener Robert:

Did you ever see "The Thrill of It All"? The kids recognize all the TV plots, just the settings and costumes changed.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

"Mars is Heaven" was published before "The Lost Race." Eventually the actors on Dimension X do "Mars Is Heaven," too!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Austin Rich:

We just had a listener make a $50 donation to Dimenstore Radio Theater! "This show is the jam!" Thanks so much! How cool is that!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
