Well I can't listen live at all today, so I thought I'd say hi Austin and everyone and hope the show is nicely dramatic

Austin Rich:

As I sort of referenced in the chat last week, this show is airing three days after Thanksgiving. (Sunday Night.) Chances are it's been a long weekend, with the family, and you're settling in to listen to a radio story...

And it's a boxing tale.
Avatar 6:05pm
Mr Fab:

Yep, the draft was a fact for American men. i can't imagine the terror of spending two years in the military. I guess men of that generation would have called me "yellow."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Austin Rich:

My grandfather was a teacher, and somehow talked his was into being a radio operator, instead of having to see combat. Still, he hated the war. I'm sure he wasn't alone.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Austin Rich:

Anyone who has seen, "Barton Fink," knows that, while never mainstream, there was an audience for "Boxing Pictures." And, of course, this bled over into radio, too. I've heard a number of shows who have done a boxing story, eventually. I think that's just one of the story tropes that was common at the time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Austin Rich:

Considering that Johnny was in the war with Dan, Johnny must also be suffering from some sort of PTSD.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Austin Rich:

I'm with you, Mr. Fab. I was exactly the wrong age to be drafted, and even if I had signed up, I sort of missed all the conflicts that the US got involved in. Still, I was never interested, and never ran the risk of really being drafted. That was certainly different that the generations previous to me.
Avatar 6:11pm
Mr Fab:

Boxing was one of most popular sports in America at the time, along with horse racing. They dwarfed football, basketball and hockey at the time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, you don't find many radio stories about those other sports. Maybe on football.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

I would be curious if this "gum" thing is authentic. I can't remember hearing / seeing it anywhere except in this story. Anyone have any insight?

Maybe Andy Breckman would know.
Avatar 6:23pm
HyperDose:

Barton Fink was a crazy movie. Very uncomfortable slow burn
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I think "Barton Fink" and "Miller's Crossing" are the Coen's at their best. They've done some great movies since, but both of those are just wonderfully written, and strange, and... just over the top. In the best possible way.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I mean, I don't really "dislike" any of their movies. But those two are SOOOOOO good.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Austin Rich:

"Good for the nerves." Did people used to say that about gum?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm

By the way Austin I love those commercials/sponsors you do for the show. Great stuff!

Dan had it coming...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Austin Rich:

Ha! He was knocked unconscious again! That won't permanently affect him for years to come!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks @Charles! While I'm editing the shows, I usually script out the commercials (roughly, in some cases) based on some of the content from the show. (Sometimes not; sometimes based on commercials I hear on commercial radio / podcasts that I want to parody.) I usually write them off the top of my head, and then revise as I read back through them later. I try to make them a little stilted - like old commercials used to be.

I've done a lot of "commercials" over the years, probably most well known in "The Adventures of Marcus Little."

The title of this episode of "The Scarlet Queen" is never mined for double entendres, perhaps for our benefit.
  6:34pm
Charles:

I did notice it had this old timey style, nice touch.
  6:35pm
Listener Robert:

I'm guessing ads then sounded stilted deliberately, so the audience would notice them.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

Good point, @Listener Robert. I also imagine that reading the ads live had a little impact on them, too.
  6:37pm
Charles:

Is it just me or that Scarlet Queen episode sounds really good?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

This kind of plot - a bunch of guests join a crew on their ship and shenanigans ensue - is such a well-worn trope that I think you could argue most people stole it from Chaucer. But I've heard versions of this story as recently as on the show Firefly.
Avatar 6:38pm
spacebrother:

Strained baby food - a likely story.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

Good ear, @Charles. Yes, the sound is very good on this one, better than normal. I did a small about of EQ, just to up the game a little, but the source recording is particular good for this episode.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Scott67:

A massacre!!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. This episode has a strangely high body count.
  7:02pm
Listener Robert:

The close of Scarlet Queen is pretty consistently an anticlimax of wisecracks and routine nautical jargon. But I like the way the star's voice often jumps into a higher register at that point. It'd be something most actors would probably try to avoid, but it's his trademark. Not this time, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Rich in Washington:

The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen just happened to be an old girlfriend's euphemism for her 'time of the month'.
  7:05pm
Listener Robert:

Good succinct way of explaining what's happened to pro boxing.
Avatar 7:07pm
Mr Fab:

Right, in those old shows, they're always going out to "the fights." Like they were just going to the movies or sumthin. You don't hear anyone say that much anymore.
Avatar 7:07pm
Mr Fab:

Rich: Boom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm

  7:10pm
Listener Robert:

The decline in spectator and gambling popularity of boxing seems to have been a major factor in making room for pro football. Some think the causality ran the other way. Pro basketball may have benefited as well.
  7:12pm
Listener Robert:

I'm interested in the trends over time in popularity of both participant and spectator sports.
Avatar 7:16pm
Mr Fab:

Robert, i read somewhere that horse racing was the most popular sport in America until TV. The horse tracks thought that no one would come to to the races if they could watch 'em on tv, thus allowing the sports that were televised to gain popularity, and spending "a day at the races" fell.
  7:21pm
Listener Robert:

The tracks in the USA (except for Nevada) also had a legal monopoly on the betting thereon, and opposed the opening of legal off-track betting parlors. And yes, by some measures they may have been the most popular spectator sport. There are so many ways to measure, though -- and that's even if you limit it to SPECTATOR popularity. Supposedly the bowling alleys claim bowling to still be the most popular participant sport, but there are many ways to measure that too.
  7:23pm
Listener Robert:

For a long time fishing was said to be the most popular. I don't know if that was nationwide or world.
  7:23pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Hi, all. I actually slept through Box 13! Normally my nap attempts are unsuccessful. Then, ironically, I had a phone appointment with my sleep doctor...during which I twice nearly nodded off. My sleep cycle rivals Chris's for unpredictability....

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Austin Rich:

My Grandfather and Father both LOVED fishing. I went went them, and tired to get into it... but hunting and fishing just wasn't my thing.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Austin Rich:

I liked records and comics and radio, more than that stuff.
  7:27pm
Listener Robert:

To your point of a while ago, I think the reason superhero radio shows weren't more popular is that without the visuals, they were just detective shows -- of which there were already plenty.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Austin Rich:

@Listener Robert: Hmmmmm. Good observation. Perhaps you are right! The Shadow - which was really almost a crime / horror show more than a superhero show - is probably the main exception. I think once comics really became super popular in the 40's, the superhero stories on the radio in the 30's and 40's just couldn't compete.
  7:30pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Interesting point
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

There wasn't really any Chandu in this episode. Guess the actor got the day off.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Austin Rich:

This was a Friday episode, so listeners had to wait the whole weekend to hear the next story beat. But we have to wait a whole week. (Chandu was daily, originally.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Austin Rich:

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this, but at this stage in the run of Dimension X, Wheaties was the sponsor. If you cut out the sponsor breaks, Dimension X is a LOT shorter.
  7:33pm
Ellen Lovebug:

My dad remembers listening to Chandu
  7:33pm
Ellen Lovebug:

The music for Dimension X is pretty rad
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm

I remember an episode of Don Joyce's "Over The Edge," where he was using various versions of this story (The Man in The Moon) as part of an elaborate cut-up. I remember really loving that episode of Over The Edge, and I've been afraid to sample this episode for that very reason. I can't compete with Don.
  7:35pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Austin Rich:

This was just after a number of new rules had been put in place, so that stations had to space themselves out, so the signals wouldn't interfere with the signals of other stations. Big fines were being issues for anyone who would try to broadcast on bandwidths that other stations were already broadcasting on.

This show was probably reinforcing those rules. And the writers - old radio writers - would be familiar with the FCC's new rules being passed out.

"So long Orson Welles." A reference to the classic "War of The Worlds" broadcast.

I wonder how radiowaves bounce off the moon, or if that was an invention of this storyteller
  7:41pm
Ellen Lovebug:

It will be interesting to see whether the purpose of the SOS call is to say "I need help here on the moon" or "I can see from here on the moon that the Earth needs help"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

@Ellen: I think that's true, or based on something you can do with the right equipment. I feel like radio waves bounce off the atmosphere, too, if I recall correctly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Austin Rich:

Uhm... The Kidnapper? That's easy. I know that one.
  7:44pm

Moonbounce is real, Ellen.

Mr Fab:

"Earth–Moon–Earth communication, also known as Moon bounce, is a radio communications technique that relies on the propagation of radio waves from an Earth-based transmitter directed via reflection from the surface of the Moon back to an Earth-based receiver." Thanks, Mr wiki!

@HyperDose: Chandu was daily, I should clarify.

Dimension X was weekly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm

But the production cycle on Dimension X was FAST, so I'm sure it felt like it was daily to some.

I think you can see what Don Joyce liked this story so much. Jammed signals, Sci-Fi trappings... radio broadcasts from strange places. It's pretty much the kinds of stories Don did when he wrote scripted stuff for OTE.
