This one's an Oscar Brown Jr. track from 1960 -- where did she find it, I want to know. I need a Maki biopic or graphic novel bio

Interesting that on Dead Spring Maki is credited with the music and the lyrics are credited to writer / manga artist Mori Masaki. Enka flavor on that one.

大砂塵 is word by word: big or great / sand / dust or trash (as in dust pan).
The CD on discogs credits Maki for words and music. If we could understand the lyrics we might know better how to render it.

I just finished the last of my ramp butter. Gotta get out and find some more. And hopefully some morels! Loving this music. The last trip I took before the Coco was an epic tour of Japan.

If you google it, you get endless hits for Johnny Guitar, which doesn't mean that's what it means, exactly, but how might one have creatively translated Johnny Guitar?

Yes, for some reason the 1954 Joan Crawford US movie Johnny Guitar was titled 大砂塵 (dai-sa-jin) which was highly regarded by some Japanese critics. 塵芥 じんかい jin-kai is trash or worthless thing. So it probably does have something to do with the movie.

I looked on Japan Amazon and don't find any book on Maki besides her being a chapter in a book by 寺本 幸司 (Koji Teramoto) who produced her second album and maybe others (didn't look). They do have a novel written by Maki and a collection of her writings; some essays and some lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Gary:

Ike! Wow, that's surprising. When I went to the Tower Records in Shibuya in 2010, the year she'd passed, there were a couple of CD towers of all of her work then in print on display on the ground floor and another floor

Have to be more than good with a dictionary to figure out which Langston Hughes poem provided the lyric for "cross the stream", which also could be translated as "against the flow" but neither seem like Langston Hughes words, I think his words would be something both more poetic and more concrete, that being part of his genius.

Gary, that one has basic enough words that I will try to listen back from the archive. I was wondering if Hughes had written something called Crossing, and then you came up with Cross.

I don't know much about Japan but I've been watching Tokyo Vice on HBO Max. Anybody else seen it? So far it depicts early 2000s Japan as grossly sexist and its reporters as just believing everything the police tell them blindly, so not very flattering.
Avatar 9:44pm
northguineahills:

@Ike: Japanese society is VERY sexist. Female professionals are still very rare, and everything is a boys club. There are a reason a lot of Japanese artistic ex-pats stay in the US.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
WR:

Don't know Tokyo Vice but sexist is par for Japan, but reporters believing the police blindly, not so much. Lots of muck raking journalism in Japan, for anything that can be sensationalized.
