Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm

One of the weirdest shows I saw at the Brooklyn Museum was in the late '90s or early 2000, a duet with Jaki Byard and Greg Osby, quite the odd couple. Byard, if I recall correctly, was in a certain stage of dementia or Alzheimers, and when they played together, Osby seemed intimidated and held back. Along with some odd chatter from Byard about tinkling the keys and replaying the same parts of a tune a few times.

JG, you picked the theme just so you could play this song, right?

@rw, not a bad supposition. I forget the original inspiration, tho.

Hey, @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm

@alanr: that does sound like a weird one. Tough, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm

mistake in my google search.... Jason Moran was the student, not Osby. Makes more sense.

Silence = Death makes me think of the brave, brilliant and effective activists of Act Up. Who could forget their battle cry: “We’re here. We’re queer. GET USED TO IT!”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
Jeff Golick:

Ha, @chresti. I had another theme in mind that would've done better even later in the evening.
Avatar 8:29pm
Ike:

Hi all!

Wow, I'd forgotten about the Jesse Helms house condom. That reminds me of the time Dan Savage's sex column readers voted to give Rick Santorum's last name the definition "the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex." For a long after that, that was the first SEO result for any search for "santorum".
Avatar 8:31pm
Ike:

Sadly, it's not currently still the first Google result that I get... but at least it's still the second, third, fourth, and sixth results! Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Ike! That is still my personal #1 association with Santorum, fwiw.

Thanks, @WR. It's history, but not so remote, and it utterly implicates issues we continue to have to manage. Epidemic. Pandemic. Utterly groundless discrimination.
