@Mr. Fab: re: Mel Henke. All I could find, in terms of "vintage" releases were all from 1962 (or older). But it looks like whoever is running the Mel Henke Bandcamp page (as the listings on Spotify) all label the album as "Psychedelic Twisters," which is clearly a modern mis-application of the term.
Avatar 👻 8:07pm
Mr Fab:

That's so weird, Austin. Why would they do that? It's quite clearly not a psychedelic song. Even if it was, that's not cool to just change the song name.
Avatar 👻 8:08pm

Sounds like I missed some fun on the show before this.

Austin Rich:

I have noticed that this weird digital future is getting EVERYTHING wrong, which shouldn't be surprising, unfortunately. Spotify and Bandcamp seem to have things just SLIGHTLY wrong, way too often. It's like when we were all file sharing in the old days, and anything remotely funny was just labeled "Weird Al," confusing kids for generations afterwards.

Spotify in particular seems incapable of getting old comps right, for some reason. Often the title of the song and the artist are swapped.

Reminds me to dig up some WVON Cicero/Chicago for a future Wiggle Room
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Austin Rich:

Consider yourself reminded. I'm a sucker for these old air checks. Basically, anything older than 1985 (when I got my first radio) sounds magical to me.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Austin Rich:

Woah. These stories about African Americans and public schools sounds... strangely current, given the issues with CRT, and violence in the classrooms now, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

WVON would be excellent, Mark. Hello Krys and all y'all

My mom used to listen to Beautiful Music/Easy Listening stations in the late 60s and the whole family would listen to Polish radio shows on WLIB an eclectic station in NYC that featured gospel and ethnic programming.

"Polish radio shows"? I have no idea what that would be, but I'm really curious!
Avatar 👻 8:21pm
MarkTime:

Several radio shows in the Polish language still run in the Chicago market
Avatar 👻 8:22pm
Mr Fab:

second time we've heard Koko Taylor today - Dr Sarcophiguy played her earlier.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Austin Rich:

I've heard some "contemporary" polish radio, but I wonder what vintage polish radio made in the US sounded like?
Avatar 👻 8:24pm
MarkTime:

Darn I did not record any on WEDC, WSBC, WOPA, etc. So many polkas
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Austin Rich:

Who doesn't enjoy a good polka?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Krys O.:

Polish language shows were geared to the greater NYC/NJ Polonia. You could walk down streets in Greenpoint Brooklyn and hear nothing but Polish, tons of Polish restaurants and businesses, clubs and concerts, etc. The sibs and I would throw taglines from the ads as punchlines. And lots of music classical, polka and such.
Avatar 👻 8:26pm
MarkTime:

One of the Chicago stations (WSBC methinks) used to have three polka shows ... Polish, German, and Slovenian
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Austin Rich:

This is what I love about radio: it's a slice of culture that you can't get otherwise.

Oh my! Don is... energetic!
Avatar 👻 8:32pm
Mr Fab:

YES, The “Real” Don Steele - legend! I remember his was perhaps the first voice I intentionally tuned in to when i got my first radio (an AM transistor), when he was probably still on KHJ.
Avatar 👻 8:33pm
Mr Fab:

Due to being in LA, “Real” Don Steele ended up in lots of TV shows & movies, e.g.: he's the announcer in Roger Corman's "Death Race 2000." Sly Stallone nabbed a few points running him over at the end.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Austin Rich:

Ahhhhhh! I feel like that voice sort of rang a bell. I'm a "rural Oregon" kid, so if it wasn't on KZEL or one of the Portland stations, we didn't hear it.
Avatar 👻 8:36pm
MarkTime:

Death Race 2000 was the first place I heard "Real" Don Steele, but then I did not visit Los Angeles until 1981. @Austin he work at KISN Portland before Los Angeles
Avatar 👻 8:36pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, like Gary Owens, his voice went far beyond LA radio.

(what the heck is up with this song?!?)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Austin Rich:

@MarkTime: Oh, really? I know we could sometimes get KISN, but I didn't really listen to that station until I lived in Portland proper. By the time I lived there (2000s to 2014) it was an oldies station... but a good one!
Avatar 👻 8:38pm
Mr Fab:

Ah, it's Paul & Linda McC. Wow, don't remember this one. Macca goes fake reggae.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Austin Rich:

I love Gary Owens. His voice is great.
Avatar 👻 8:38pm

This song does not sound familiar ... remember when there were still "regional" hits? Did not hear in Chicago or Miami at the time
Avatar 👻 8:39pm

I almost included Gary Owens today, but held it back for June
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

Avatar 👻 8:48pm

@Krys O - my favorite Goon Show involved a gold heist, where they covered up the crime by having the gold made into musical instruments, only all that was delivered was a triangle
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
