I wish I had these Smithsonian Folkways bird records

One late summer we had a young Carolina Wren practicing its songs. But, it sounded like it had been listening to our Radiohead records. It was barely recognizable as a Carolina Wren.

For those not super into 20C American poetry, Charles Olsen is a pretty big deal there, in the mid 1900s.

Most of those Smithsonian records' recordings are now available for free online.

Im trying to identify really pretty, small, shiny solid gray birds that occupied a birdhouse in my yard. Not having any luck with an internet search - Really nice singing too / any birders out there? I’m in northern NJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49am
alanSixº:

I think it might be catbirds?
Avatar 6:50am
HyperDose:

Hey Buddha. Think I was already passed out by then. Hope that friend in the city you were taking care of is doing well.

Yeah pretty sure it’s catbirds

Morning All. The birds around here need to get busy eating the tent caterpillars. The caterpillars are leaving their "frass" all over the place. Gross little bugs.

  7:07am
Rob from Maryland:

Thanks, G!
  7:08am
Rob from Maryland:

@alanSix, if the small gray birds are occupying a nest box, they could be Tufted Titmouse. Catbirds don't use next boxes, they build a "normal" nest in bushes or trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am

durrr Henry Cow isnt a band about a cow otherwise it would be called Henry The Cow

Hi Rob from Maryland: the tufted titmouse(s) around here like to get in my love's hair. I have some great silly photos of them landing on her head, where they pull out strands of her hair & fly off to weave their nests :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43am
alanSixº:

Rob maybe but the birds in my box are solid gray and shiny with little if any variant in color - the photos of the tufted titmouse I see online seem to have a range of shade - are they sometimes solid?
Avatar 7:46am
TDK60:

Morning alanSixº: Maybe a cat bird? I saw one on my walk in a park yesterday. I fake meowed at it. It paused for a second to look at this example of homo "sapiens."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
