For what is worth, gun laws in Canada are very, very stringent. I have my name reached ever morning by the national police data base as a licensed holder. Getting the license involves a ton of verification (ex. names of ex conjugal partners over 10 years, etc). I know the tragedies recently in the US have been a difficult national discussion for you all, but up here, the current Canadian legislation/gun ban is being used as a as political wedge issue, and not based on the reality here.

Hey Paulo! HellGate started by some old Village Voice folks @Ike.

@Katy, it's used as a political wedge issue here, too, unfortunately.

Good to know @Brian D -- I wasn't aware who was behind it, just that it looks promising.

For me, the most interesting local story lately is one that affects me directly: getting redrawn into a new Congressional district, NY-10, along w/lower Manhattan. Heaps of different candidates running for this one, and I'm guessing two of the Manhattanites will have the edge over anybody from Brooklyn. (Or Westchester... WTF?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48am

Yeah, the redistricting in NY is a cluster----

Yuh-Line Niou seems OK to me. Everybody else so far has issues or is unproven. (E.g. who the hell is Dan Goldman?!?) IMHO Niou has a good NY Assembly record.

Hey Don! Don't know much about Niou. de Blasio has name recognition, which, unfortunately, is often enough.

Good morning Brian & all.
Avatar 4:08am
_Ike_:

@Brian@4:00, in this district, I think that *won't* be enough. Or at least in Park Slope and increasingly in Sunset Park, we have a very dialed-in electorate that actually pays attention and shows up. And even though the Slope is largely white and affluent, its #1 and #2 choices for city council were progressives of color, Shahana Hanif and Brandon West. This is supposed to be de Blasio's core neighborhood but he's yesterday's news now, as long as Niou or maybe Rivera or Jones pound the pavement and knock on enough doors.
Avatar 4:09am
_Ike_:

That said, I have no idea what will happen in the Manhattan part of the district.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am
fred:

We have elections next week here. I might vote more to the center than usual, I think it's important to have a counter-power to Macron. I'm not optimistic though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17am
Brian D:

@Ike, yeah I was more thinking how Manhattanites in that district will vote. Agree with you totally, though.

_Ike_:

Ugh, that clip about anti-choice "Democrat" Henry Cuellar, yuck. Sadly his challenger seems to have lost that primary by a few hundred votes. Gee thanks, Nancy Pelosi and Jim Clyburn. BUT, on a more positive note, a different conservative Democrat (and apparently a huge jerk), Kurt Schrader, was defeated in Oregon by a progressive, and other Blue Dog Democrats have been beaten. Plus, prospective new Blue Dogs were defeated in races for open districts. For way too much detail:

Hell Gate's you mean? Yeah, Ike, I almost didn't do that Dem story because it depresses the sh*t out of me. But, I heard about Schrader, so good news there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am
fred:

@Ike: Do you have a link to those rundowns? I don't live there, but it might give me ideas
Avatar 4:38am
_Ike_:

There's no direct link, you just have to go here and then Ctrl-F NY-10 or NY-12 or scroll way way way down to them: primaries.substack.com...
This blog is a great resource because it also shows a lot of the MONEY RAISED by politicians across the country through FEC reports and the like, and reports on suspicious Super PAC money, etc.

I'm pretty clueless about sports too. I didn't even know Finland had won the hockey world cup last Sunday until the next morning. Unlike my friend, who was kept awake by drunk partiers next door to her all night.

Brian D:

Belated yes, @Fred. Wales play Ukraine in World Cup qualifying, with the winner going to the finals in Qatar in November.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13am

And, @Don, I watched that game, and was cheering for Finland. However, had I known their victory would have kept your friend awake...

The start of this track kind of reminded me of a slowed-down version of the black metal surf music tribute that's circling around the net.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16am

@Don: That's why my only rooting interest is against France and Algeria. Fans smash things up in celebration if they win, in anger if they lose. Makes getting home from a show an ordeal. So I want them to lose, so there are fewer games

Thanks Brian, that Dreamachine thingy, individual or collective, would seem to promise a short cut to insight, a fast track to transcendence. Good luck with that. I prefer the slow train with the most elementary. Takes much longer, but sticks. Transcendence is much, much closer than commonly imagined.
