Good morning, Jeff. Tip: just found out about putting up aluminum foil on windows to reflect sunlight during heat waves. Doing such now, not all but some windows, south & west facing.

A cooler morning here (58F, 14C) down south in Mexico City, checking in for music to accompany my espresso and bread. Stay cool up north in the oven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am

@TDK60! Foil on the windows has the added bonus of keeping telepathic signals from outer space from entering the brain.

@WR, thanks for the thanks; great to see you.

Hello Jeff and all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:18am
DJpeterDE:

In all seriousness: while I do say “contemporary classical music” in casual conversation, I try to avoid the oxymoron when talking to educated listeners like y’all. But “notated music” doesn’t always cover it. What do people say? “New music?” Braxton likes “creative music” do we restrict that to music in the black tradition? Labels are of course insidious but sometimes useful?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am
Jeff Golick:

Greets, @duke!

@DJpeterDE, these are good questions, but I'm out of my depth. Feels like it might mostly have to do with where the funding comes from? (Or doesn't come from...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am
Jeff Golick:

How much space is there between this Muncy and Steve Lacy and Evan Parker?
Avatar 9:22am
TDK60:

Jeff, Thanks! Don't want any telepathy from outer space, so it's a "win-win" as "they" say these days. // DJPeterDE: I don't mind the term 'classical' - just shorthand for more discussion... Like 'rock.' What's that?
Avatar 🥁 9:22am
Listener Gregory:

I think "classical music" refers to a genre now, so it can be contemporary. Just like "urban country music." UGH! Did I really say that? Well, anyway, the names cannot be taken very literally.
Avatar 🥁 9:22am

Jeff, I don't think there's any space at all between them!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always had the idea that Miles *scared* people into greatness ...which obviously worked, but I think is part of the nature of what was produced as well ? ...But people also speak of various other Jedi mind tricks Miles used to get creativity flowing - little things he'd say that were maybe the broadest obtuse instructions - but he knew they'd work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Jeff Golick:

@DJpeter - I kept switching back and forth between Evanses.

@LG: all good points, though I should have restricted my generalization to the electric Miles period, probs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Jeff Golick:

@RRN63, in re that, I just came across this, from the drummer Leon Chancler: "He (Miles) came to me one night after the concert and said, ‘You know those little phrases you play, don’t finish them.’ That was it. That gave me a whole other approach to fill-ins and polyrhythms."
  11:01am
Listener Gregory:

Even the great ones no doubt grew tremendously under his tutelage. If Evans had not been in the Kind of Blue sessions, what would his later work have been?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01am

Zackly - those. A very subtle thing, maybe, to consider in assessing someone's greatness.

The Heat Warps site has a link to a complete and to a edited version of the Japan 1973 set Jeff pulled from… one of these days I will sit down and listen to every version of “tune in 5” to trace the evolution. (And to think that last night I was basically doing the same thing for Fats Waller and James P Johnson, sorting out the multiple releases of their joint “Louisiana Sugar Babes” session.)
