Fun fact, at my graduate school graduation party I had a family friend's adult son do graphology readings (he analyzed our handwriting)

It's a four-for-one deal this week, on the show! Sit down! You might be able to get a Seltzer, if you're thrifty.

Ellen Lovebug:

I love the snide and understated humor.

Alan has become my favorite voice. If only he were alive today and could narrate audiobooks.

I do really like this voice. It's very memorable.

I've been thinking about watching his films this winter, when I need something to do and I'm really bored.

I just re-watched "Blade Runner," and it's a Sci-Fi Noir... and I realized it was produced by Alan Ladd Jr.
  6:09pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Are you sure? HAHHA
  6:10pm
Ellen Lovebug:

WHAT??? I never knew that!!! Wow. Also: I'd tune in for a live-chat synchronized viewing of Alan Ladd films!

Shady Operator would be a great name for a solo musician or spoken-word artist

I get dizzy easily, too, but I did love merry-go-rounds, and even more, carousels. Because I love horses. The Iron Maiden?! Wow, was not expecting that reference.

Salem, where The Lava Lamp Lounge is located, has a well-known carousel, and a lot of folks like to get photos of their kids on the carousel horses. It's very cool, actually. I've visited a few times.

Mr Fab:

Junior had something to do with getting "Star Was" produced, too.
  6:14pm
Charles:

I hope she used a karate chop to knock out Dan. That's how I pictured it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Austin Rich:

Ladd Jr. produced a run of Sci-Fi films for a while. He was very influential in the biz, mostly because he was sitting on a fortune he inherited from his father.
  6:14pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Dan is so stoic about getting hurt in the line of duty
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Austin Rich:

Charles: unless the shows contradicts you, I think we should count that as cannon.
Avatar 6:16pm
Mr Fab:

Dan's had so many blows to the head, he's gonna get as punch-drunk as a pro football player when he gets older.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. Fab: I should write a spec script, where it shows Holiday as an older writer, and he has trouble assembling the stories without help, due to all the blows to the head.
  6:18pm
Ellen Lovebug:

...but Suzie is still there, piecing them together for him, because she can understand his fragmented attempts at speech and read his body language
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Austin Rich:

I like that idea, Ellen! We should collab on this script.
Avatar 6:19pm
Mr Fab:

There ya go, Austin & Ellen! As someone who has been knocked unconscious (car accident) I did not just wake up, shake my head, and go about my business. Was hospitalized for a bit.
(Fact-checking the pulp fiction!)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

I have a standing desk in my office, but I had to move it, so for the longest time, I couldn't "elevate" the desk, only use it in the lowered position.

The other day, I cleaned my office, and cleared enough space around the desk to use it in the standing position. Between that, and my standing table that has by DJ gear on it, I can ACTUALLY do my show standing up, if I want to. I'm thinking about getting the exercise bike in here, so I can do that when I'm listening to Sheenas.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. Fab: I fell and hit my head, and was also hospitalized (in 2014, I believe?). I can concur: you don't just "wake up" and go back to work.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Austin Rich:

I did a NANOWRIMO novel one year, where in the middle of the book, the detective gets knocked out, and his partner has to take up the case, because the lead was hospitalized for a couple days. I knew that bit before I started working on anything else.
  6:22pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I would love to collab on this.
  6:23pm
Krys O:

Hello!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Austin Rich:

I like how, occasionally, the "Macguffin" of the Box 13 stories are sort of sophisticated, like in this case, Dante folios.

Hello, Krys O!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
MHLee:

I've been considering putting on a fake radio broadcast complete with old-timey commercial as sponsor.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

MHLee: if you do that, I will totally help you!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I can even loan you some of the commercials I've already written; I've got 8 months of commercials for this show in the can.
  6:24pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Hi :) Oh, and I've also had a head injury. Also: It's super eerie that it's Dante folios, because literally during this podcast, I've been Tweeting with a friend who's listening to a new song by Jamie Campbell Bower, which I literally during this podcast informed her was based on Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Austin Rich:

It's interesting, the source recording for this broadcast has an eerie ghost sound of some other recording in the background. Most likely, the person who was copying these from the original discs was using a tape for the transfer process, that was re-used a number of times.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Austin Rich:

Whoa, Ellen! Dante is in the zeitgeist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
MHLee:

I'll have that in mind for episode 20. I try to do something every five. The circus was 5 and 10.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Austin Rich:

In a month or two, when we switch from Scarlet Queen to the new show, I think you should check it out, Ellen. It will have more of a noir feel, and has a pair of celebrities in the lead roles. I might work for you better than Scarlet Queen.
Avatar 6:27pm
Mr Fab:

That's interesting about the sophisticated McGuffins - most real illegal deals are just over drugs or sumthin.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Austin Rich:

That was my thinking, Mr. Fab. Stealing art and books is not worth it. But drugs and guns... that's the way to make cash.
  6:28pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Thanks for the tip, I will check it out!
  6:28pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Good job, Suzie <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm

I dunno the art thieves have been pretty good
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Austin Rich:

(I know a rare book dealer, and he struggles to pay his bills. Selling books just doesn't pay off well. And he will be a guest on this show soon, to talk about classic Sci-Fi authors.)
  6:29pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Love you all, a pal is coming to visit in 20 minutes so I'm off after the interlude
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm

A "Bubble Dancer" was a kind of exotic dancer that was popular in the 40's and 50's.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Austin Rich:

See you next time, Ellen!
  6:31pm
Krys O:

Like a fan dancer? Like Sally Rand?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

The sound isn't bad this week on The Scarlet Queen, but it's certainly a little "tinny," and the source recording was very quiet. I did my best to improve things, but it's still a little like getting a phone call from 1948.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

Sally Rand was the most famous, so this is just a reference to her act, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
MHLee:

I've actually been trying to figure out how to get a tinny sound
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

I think that was the most dialog that Neilson has ever gotten, and we almost have a sense of what his "non-yelling" voice is like.
  6:32pm
Krys O:

I can empathize with your drive to clean up the audio, but it sounds good here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
MHLee:

For something I'm doing
Avatar 6:33pm
Mr Fab:

didn't know that about 'bubble dancers.' Love that burlesque lore.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

I use GarageBand to mix / edit a lot of my shows, and there's a "telephone" setting that I use for my "old-timey" sound. You can adjust the settings to get it more or less "tinny."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
MHLee:

Went to a circus themed burlesque last week
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Austin Rich:

There was a Warner Bros. cartoon that parodied Sally Rand's act, which is how I first encountered it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
MHLee:

I have like a 2012 computer i bought for garage band I could mess with, thanks
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

GarageBand is free with all the different versions of the Mac OS... but you have to buy a Mac to get that deal.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

I like how, even in 1948, $500 was both a fair amount of money and... not all that much, which you think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
MHLee:

Yeah, that's why I bought a ten year old macbook
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

There is something about this performance that is not at all Chinese, and certainly underlines the American Production quality of this show. (All the accents are by Americans, usually.) I'm not sure what this actor was going for but it doesn't really sound Chinese at all. I think the actor was just guessing.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

(The performance of Soo Ling, I mean.)
  6:55pm
Krys O:

Thanks, Austin!
Avatar 6:56pm
Mr Fab:

I remember listing to an episode of the Phil Marlowe OTR series, and a character from India had what sounded more like the stereotypical American Indian voice, y'know that "me heap big chief" grunting style. Guess they figured that's what all "indians" sound like, and the audience won't know or care.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Austin Rich:

A very common problem in old radio, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:57pm

My mom and I listened to WOR-AM in the early 70s and they featured CBS Mystery radio shows on Saturday nights. So enthralling.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Austin Rich:

CBS Mystery Radio ran FOREVER. I feel like I was still hearing re-runs in the 80's, if there weren't actually new episodes then, too.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Austin Rich:

MHLee: I heard about that! I'm listening to a podcast where the hosts are listening to Voyager, and they talk about that quite a bit. It's astonishing that it happened that recently, but then again... TV is full of very real, strange stories.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, it looks like it ran until '82, and then was in reruns for a while after that, Krys O.
  7:12pm
Krys O:

The intro reminded me of Kirk Douglas in Letter to Three Wives lamented that his wife, Ann Sothern wrote drivel for commercial radio.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Austin Rich:

Oh, to writer drivel for pay.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Austin Rich:

Another era.
  7:15pm
Charles:

I never get tired of Chandu music.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, the Korla Pandit music is really charming.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Austin Rich:

So, Korla does backing music during the commercials for Chandu, too, which I cut out of the show when I present it for these presentations. I think I'll do a show where I play all those commercials that I cut out, just for the Korla music.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Austin Rich:

This episode gives you the character dynamics pretty quickly, establishes the power Chandu has, and then offers a nice information dump, so you can get a sense of what's happened, and where they are going.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Austin Rich:

The good thing about Chandu is that each episode more or less recaps most everything from the previous episodes, so you can sort of pick up what's happening pretty quickly.
Avatar 7:22pm
Mr Fab:

this is more like a Mexican accent!

"Si, senorrrr!"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Austin Rich:

You're right, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect, since Chandu was daily, that they couldn't always get the same voice actors from show to show. I bet, occasionally, the secondary actors were less familiar with the source material, or the ethnicities that the characters are supposed to be.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Austin Rich:

They basically lay out the entire plot, from the previous episodes in this conversation, here.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Austin Rich:

I like how easily the kids adapt to the sandstorm.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm

  7:28pm
Charles:

Looking forward to it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Austin Rich:

This was on a Sunday Night, the weekend of Thanksgiving. For a lot of people, this was the last thing they heard before bed.

I can only imagine what work was like on Monday, after.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

I liked this idea so much, I wrote my own weird sci-fi "Creation" story in college. It wasn't very good, but it was very inspired by this story.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

In the MST3K movie, Crow tires to "dig" his way out of the Satellite of Love. I always thought that was a reference to this story.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

I like this Heinlein twist on the "generation" ship trope, which was already played out by this point. This version of it sort of re-vitalizes the idea in a way that I think really works well.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Austin Rich:

That's about it this week. See ya next time!
  7:57pm
