This is an original Strata-East record
  8:26pm
Listener Gregory:

That was an unusual Heath Bros piece.
  8:26pm
Listener Gregory:

Presumably, Smilin’ Billy is Billy Higgins.
  8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

Of course, a minute after I wrote that it sounds unusual it began to sound exactly like the Heath Bros!

WR:

Billy Higgins is a reasonably guess but seems it is someone in the Heath family.

great track. rap snitches telling all their business. hey @observetions and all

Listener Gregory:

@WR, I don’t really know who it refers to, but I’ve often heard Higgins called Smilin’ Billy Higgins, and he does in fact smile angelically while playing. Also, there was a drum feature in the piece. No doubt later someone will inform us that it refers to Miles Davis as an inside joke or something.

LG, you are correct: "The album included Jimmy’s four-part “Smiling Billy Suite” (dedicated to the drummer Billy Higgins)". That quote is from Jimmy Heath's NYT obituary. On the back cover of the album is a comment that the album title, suggested by their sister Betty, "Marchin' On" was in honor of their parents so I was looking for further family connections. There are, but Smilin' Billy wasn't one of them.

The La Roca vinyl is the only recording on today's episode that I have. Though it is packed away in storage.
