Hey there! Glad to see you're all back for more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
doctorjazz:

That IS a cool lineup, Dean! Never managed to catch Braxton, sob...😒
  5:16pm
Dean:

Hey, doctorjazz. When I lived in Southern California, Braxton played several nights at Yoshi's in Oakland (memorialized on Leo Records), 1997. I flew up for six of the shows.

How's the Technics working out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
doctorjazz:

Loving that Technics-after some break in, sound is lovely (Absolute Sound put it on it's list of CD players they recommend). Streaming FMU on it now. The next thing I need to do is figure out how to get it to play music off my external hard drives (nave a three, 4 TB each, pretty full of music. I think the problem is that it just won't "see" a drive that large).
AIR!!! (I did get to see them, around the time they released Air Lore).
  5:28pm
Dean:

Mine took some time to "warm up," too. But even after the first day I heard improvement that continued for at least a month.

4TB?! I have a tiny external drive that works fine. Can you partition external drives?

The closest I've come to hearing Threadgill live was when he was visiting at Berkeley. A noontime concert featured his student ensemble. He conducted, but didn't play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
doctorjazz:

I've been lucky enough to catch Threadgill a number of times, with the Sextett, Very Very Circus, and at an ASCAP honor to him (he didn't play, a pianist played one of his compositions, he just spoke).
  5:36pm
ruth:

Thanks for that Anteloper piece ... Just gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
doctorjazz:

I have a lot of hi-rez music files on the hard drives, recorded by a friend with a MacBook (I have a Wimdows PC-there is only one format that works for both, from what I understand). The Technics is also fussy about the formatting, from what I gather, which could also be an issue. (Oddly, when I first got it, it DID recognize the hard drives, played them once, but has refused to ever since).

(avoiding logging onto my work site to get some work done, loving the music).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
david w:

Thank you, doctor.
  5:40pm
Dean:

Make sure you have the latest firmware, though I kinda doubt that's the issue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
doctorjazz:

Not sure how to check the firmware, or upgrade it if it's not current, but I'll check.

Nov. 16, 2021, is the latest version. Essentially, you have to activate the full menu (which you might already be using, since you're streaming), plug in Ethernet on the back panel, and check for the upgrade. Takes just a few short minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
doctorjazz:

?plug in ethernet...?
  5:47pm
Dean:

Run a cable from your router directly into the player. I tried doing it over wi-fi, but it was too much of a hassle. Hardwire is better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
doctorjazz:

This is when it feel old...
  5:49pm
Dean:

Heh, I used to make my own Ethernet cables in the '90s. I gave up when I realized I wasn't very adept at it.

Oy. I tired it. A dozen color coded micro wires with no mistakes allowed. Almost killed me.

I've always wondered how kids who grew up nowhere near rotary landlines nevertheless instinctively know that you're supposed to pick up the ear piece and dial the dial. I saw my kids do it with preschool toys.
