Hello Jeff and folks. The melancholic music in the first set had me wondering if the passing of the Queen of the British Empire was shaping the choices. Then Patty Waters sang a song that put a twist to that thread of musing.

docjazz - this Smithsonian box of vinyl was big for me :
jazzhistoryonline.com...
- as I got it from the local Library & taped it all. Somewhere - as a school age kid - I just plunged into the reality of Jazz as something with a lot of the dynamics of Rawk but its own continent (as it struck me & I conceived of it) ...discovering Trane the same way & that was that. I hear 'Lonely Woman' & still feel the frisson of discovering Ornette - & Cecil Taylor too from that box...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that link, @doc!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34am
doctorjazz:

RRN63-that box was a revelation, and going through it chronologically let me "get" the progression of jazz over the 20th Century in a way that randomly picking up a record couldn't (I had tried a few years earlier with Miles Smiles from the library, couldn't make heads or tails of it). Jelly Roll Morton, Duke, Bird, Ornette, Trane and Cecil hit me hard as well (I still have the LP version, which I pulled out for my daughter when she moved in for the Pandemic, and played partway through for her).
I have the LP version-it got some critical flak for not featuring the 60's and free jazz enough, so they released a CD version later, which added 2 discs, and ended with the World Saxophone Quartet (Have both versions, though only see the LP version right now).

I got lots of LPs from my public library. They had a Verve best of Bird disk that I took out once a year (“nope, still don’t get it”) until one day I thought to myself, “I bet I’ll get it now” and got it home and something had clicked for me

Yes to all of that re Smithsonian Box. From work songs to Ornette. Maybe - a side & a half out of maybe seven LPs for Free ? It dipped a toe into the 1960s in other words - but did exactly that in terms of both presenting the scope in time - & really let us hear each phase. Good choice of tracks. Yup - stay with me forever.
Born @ the end of 1963 - my nervous system just seems to resonate with PostWar Jazz. Bop is like Caffeine. Just fits the chemical receptors. & I love the Beats & the Modernist Painters too. & of course Rawk. The thrill of the Modernist discovery is hard-wired into me from my era I reckon. We might argue (or - somebody might...) about the difference between the Mod & the PostMod. One era has the seeds of the next I think. It's a continuum as well as a disruption... Well anyway.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Clay subbed for Johnny Allen a while other morning when JA was late. Played a bunch of 'Fusion'. Love how FMU (especially) has informed me of how much the legacy & avenues of Electric Instruments in Jazz thrive in so many directions. (Not necessarily 'radio friendly' as 70s Fusion tried to be?...)

I was listening to that Clay cover as well, was impressed at how good a set he put together (not what I'd expect from his regular show).

Late 20th century, it's all either fallout for miles, or fallout from Miles

Yeah the thot used to be 'BitchesBrew' was a one-off orphan with no children. Now that idea seems actually quaint.

They sourced the material direct from the RivBea Archive. In 2018 Ed Hazell met me in Orlando, FL to help search and copy the archive for my book. He of course curates for NB, so after the introduction to Sam's daughter Monique, a deal was struck. It was part of my Sammy Trifecta—get the book out, get archival material released, and find a home for the archive (now at University of Pittsburgh). I will die happy now!!! :-)
