Hello, WR and Henry (who knows his mallet history).

Webhamster Henry:

That balafon buzz is from spider egg sacs:" A small hole in each gourd is covered with a membrane traditionally of thin spider's-egg sac filaments (nowadays more usually of cigarette paper or thin plastic film) to produce the characteristic nasal-buzz timbre of the instrument" - WikiP

I've been looking forward to this show!

careful, your mentioning of ngoni may confuse some (like me) that ngoni is also a mallet played instrument.

Thanks, Henry. I love that buzz. I'd put it into everything if I could.

Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

Just got back from a frustrating hour at the USPS. Typically, they didn't have Priority Stickers at the self serve area to go with the Priority Envelopes, so I committed the cardinal sin of using an Express address label on a Priority envelope--had to open and re-do. This is after getting stuck behind 2 people occupying both windows. Neither of them seem to have ever been to a post office in their life, and the two tellers really couldn't give two f**cks. So, working until at least 7 tonight. I mean, this one girl came in with this whole f***ing stack of wooden postcards to "save the date" for her wedding, and instead of doing her homework and seeing if they could actually be mailed as postcards she just brought the whole freaking box in. Turns out that no, no matter how many stamps she put on em, they were to heavy to go as postcards and each. one. had. to. go. into. its. own. little. envelope. which they tried to explain to this dimwit...and then of course they didn't have enough padded envelopes on hand at the PO even though these weren't the free ones; they were ones you had to pay for. I WANTED to yell "GURL, BRING ALL OF THAT SHIT TO STAPLES AND LET THEM FIGURE IT OUT." Then there was the poor woman who foolishly thought that the PO would have packing tape to closer her return box with. Gah. I need a drink.

@WR: Mamadou wanted it to be clear that he is playing ngoni (not the larger kora), both string instruments with gourd resonators.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
david w:

Threemoons, aaargh. This kind of thing happens to me EVERY TIME I go to the post office!

Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@David W I feel blessed that I can usually walk there, get my shit out of my PO box, and get done and HOME in 30 minutes or under -- once I did a speed walk and got it all done in 25 minutes. Today was a disaster. The only person more annoyed than me in there today was the poor guy in front of me -- double parked; I held his spot as he ran out TWICE to chase off traffic cops. He had a prepaid label; all he needed was to get a send receipt from the scan from the desk.

This is the elder Diabaté? Lovely.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm

Yes, βrian. Good point. Mamadou is only about 40 years old. Kélétigui dead 10 years. But I don't know the relation. Many of the musicians on these tracks have the name Diabaté.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
WR:

According to Wikipedia he is not related to the brothers, Mamadou and Toumani, though he performed with Toumani.

My only major reservation about digital music is that there is usually even less details about the creation and context of the recordings and performers than on pop music LP jackets of the past.
