Today: Subways and surveillance - with Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate

In New York City, MetroCards are being phased out in favor of a smartphone-scanning system called OMNY, which tracks the identity, location, and travel habits of every passenger of New York's subways and buses. Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate discusses his "privacy guide to OMNY" - and why we should be skeptical about subway surveillance.

Christopher Robbins at Hell Gate

A Basic Privacy Guide to OMNY, the MTA’s MetroCard Replacement (by Christopher Robbins in Hell Gate, Sep 9, 2022): “Welcome to the PanOMNYcon.”

New York City Subway System to Install Security Cameras in Train Cars (NYT, Sep 20, 2022): “Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority would install two security cameras on every car to lure back people frightened of crime . . . ‘You think Big Brother is watching you on the subway?’ Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a news conference in a Queens subway yard. ‘You’re absolutely right. That is our intent: to get the message out that we’re going to be having surveillance of activity on the subway trains, and that’s going to give people great ease of mind.’”

Press conference at the MTA Corona Maintenance Facility with Gov. Kathy Hochul (Sep 20, 2022)

Morgan Stanley Allows Its Clients’ Social Security Numbers to Get Auctioned on Hard Drives (Wall Street on Parade, Sep 21, 2022): "That’s pretty astonishing in itself: Being lectured on the competent handling of personal client information by someone buying hardware at an online auction site when you are a Global Systemically Important Bank with $1.17 trillion in assets and more than a century of existence. According to the SEC, the “vast majority of the hard drives from the 2016 Data Center Decommissioning remain missing” and in July 2020 Morgan Stanley Smith Barney had to notify “approximately 15 million impacted customers” that their personal data might be floating around out there – unencrypted."

A Dad Took Photos of His Naked Toddler for the Doctor. Google Flagged Him as a Criminal. (by Kashmir Hill, NYT, Aug 21, 2022): “After setting up a Gmail account in the mid-aughts, Mark, who is in his 40s, came to rely heavily on Google. He synced appointments with his wife on Google Calendar. His Android smartphone camera backed up his photos and videos to the Google cloud. He even had a phone plan with Google Fi.”

“Two days after taking the photos of his son, Mark’s phone made a blooping notification noise: His account had been disabled because of ‘harmful content’ that was ‘a severe violation of Google’s policies and might be illegal.’ A ‘learn more’ link led to a list of possible reasons, including ‘child sexual abuse & exploitation.’”

I assume other NYCers also get a credit card with money on it that comes out of their pay checks pretax. It's going to be such a pain in the ass to file for reimbursement on those every time they're denied at the stores that sell the OMNY cards.

BTW, with the Metrocards, the police can do a kind of primitive tracking on it . It would know when a particular card was swiped at a station, and the pattern of entrances, correlated with ground truth and possible charge card info, in certain cases would be used to know when a specific person entered the system.

.. to the extent the MTA has a margin given that they consistently screw their budget despite having a total monopoly.

We're arguing over the wrong things here, though. The point is not to find a better way of letting people pay a private company for a necessary service. The point is to make transportation and right and a utility and make it free for all who need it. THAT's the only fight worth winning here. The rest is just finger-in-the-dike stuff.

@Ultradamno: YES! Also because I can't tell you the number of times when I lived in NYC my unlimited-fare metrocard wouldn't scan at the turnstile, and then after multiple tries, it told me I'd already used it and couldn't get through. When there were actual MTA staff in the "token" booths, they'd just wave me through. But, now that they've removed almost all staff from the subways...I guess we're just jumping turnstiles now. Not a safe choice for anyone, esp. those disabled or BIPOC. I guess when I visit NYC next time, I'll just...uh...not take the subway.

Handy, that book is Against Security by Harvey Molotch: press.princeton.edu...

karlward @9:10: "Harvey Molotch's great book Against Security spends a chapter talking about how so-called security against fare evasion makes the subways much less safe. If you want a safer subway, make the subway free. press.princeton.edu... "

New York City made a law that mandates businesses accept cash payments instead of credit cards, but I guess they don't want to apply it to the MTA

Her pride in imitating a notorious dystopia is what’s so chilling. I’ve lost all respect for her just for that. It wasn’t an error, it was honest.

@Sam: Please don't attribute violent crime to people with mental illnesses as a broad statement. Folks with mental illness (I am one of them) are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than we are to commit them.

It’s the massive budget they want to justify. it doesn’t matter that it’s just theater of security

ten people get shot in nyc over the weekend and eric adams is in the dominican republic surveying damage. wtf?

Love Adam’s leaving empty cop cars all over to control speeding. Think that is more on point version of big bro

On top of Wendy's point, why are "bath salts" being sold? Something something unregulated late-stage capitalism. And why are people taking them? Self-medicating when they can't get their real meds that are probably too expensive, I'm betting.
