Here in Salem, the cover-band problem is huge. There's a few places where you can plan original music, but really, you should sound like a grunge band from the 90's. But there are a LOT of places to place if you are a cover band. And those cover bands charge ridiculous prices to get in... original bands are afraid to do a show for more than a few dollars, for fear of scaring away the possible audience. It's a real bummer.

I saw 7 Seconds in the late 90's, and they played a pretty good mix of their entire catalog, and ended their set with "99 Red Balloons."

I saw them 10 years later. They did the exact same set, and even told some of the same jokes between sets.

It was kind of amazing.

I know in PDX, around 2002, was the first time I saw a band pretending to be another band on stage. And usually, it was: the new wave band does Devo, the punk band does Ramones, the metal band does Sabbath, etc.

PDX had transplants from all over the country in the early 2000's, and all of them started bands, and a lot of them brought traditions from other cities. I'm sure that's how it got to PDX.

The cool record store in Salem was actually shut down by the building owner, who found the goat head statue and the posters to the "offensive," and they were kicked out of the building. I helped the owners pack up, as that was my fave store in town.
