This brings to mind 1970s Gary Burton. Just realizing that few vibraphonists seem to have been influenced by him.

I was thinking Mary Halvorson, what with all the woopy floopy sounds on this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
StringOFperils:

Why DOES the vibraphone have a 70s vibe? Possibly the Fender Rhodes piano and cross-wired memory? Food-replacement for thought.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19am
DJpeterDE:

Secondary thought: the Real Book really advanced the Burton/Swallow/Metheny recordings so that makes the (lack of) Burton influence curioser
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am

Vibes kind of got shuffled out of the hierarchy by the 1980s. And it's an awfully heavy piece of gear to gig with. The mallet instruments always give me a bit of poignancy -- I went through a couple of rounds of lessons on an old xylophone (Deagan? Musser?) in my single-digit years, but my teacher pushed the Rubank blue book of exercises. I found the old book (here it is, still) around 2000 and found that, no, it wasn't just because I was a little kid. These really are a load of tedious, amelodic, soul killing exercises. No wonder I quit both times. But yeah, I could've been a mallet guy in another world. God knows vibes and marimbas are unobtainably expensive nowadays.

As soon as I finish cleaning up the breakfast dishes, I’m going back to the Sam Rivers Sessionography! I’m up to 1987 or so, just skimming through, then hope to return to the top to read more. Big tidbit so far: he took over his daughter’s sewing machine and started making almost all of his clothes in the 70s. Pants, dashikis… second big fashion tip: his black turtlenecks actually more like leotards with snaps at the crotch. Because when he exerted himself on stage he didn’t want to come untucked!!!

SOp is correct on all those general vinyl tips, but I'd expect if you were set up badly, you'd notice it on other albums as well.
The stylus being dusty certainly could do it-take a look and blow if you see a big ball of dust ("just pucker up and blow...")

In my day, we'd do the same with the quarter on the tone arm (which is why many of my old records are unplayable)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am
doctorjazz:

@LG, hahaha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am
adamdoesit:

doc, yeah, I cleaned the record with a D4-like solution and a discwasher-like brush before playing. It looks like it may want a deeper clean though. De-dusted the stylus, too.

SOp, I tried upping the tracking weight from 2g to ~2.25g. No dice. I'll try dialing up the anti-skate, since it seems to be skipping ahead.

LG, too true.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:15am
doctorjazz:

@adamdoesit-if you are willing to shelp to Joisey, have a VPI Vacume Cleaning machine, will give a good deep clean (but, again, if it's scratched, you can clean forever, won't help).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
StringOFperils:

Yes, that is a skating issue...but sometimes gunk can accumulate next to the stylus tip, if it's been plowing through a mixture of dirt and even D-4. Try using a fine, clean sable-type brush (a soft artist's brush) to gently clean that, by gently touching it to the back of the stylus while dragging it forward and over the diamond. Repeat as necessary. This can help.

LG, another skating issue.

SOp, you mean by cleaning it? That would make sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
StringOFperils:

Yes. Sometimes it can get deposits going at the base of the stylus, where it would be uppermost when sitting in a record groove. Causes it to sit higher in that little spiral trench, reducing/altering the way it's supposed to contact the record....like shoulders made of dirt...that's what I meant by profile (and I apologize for using up so much chat mileage to describe this :)
